Hi all,

I have searched the forums and unfortunately not been able to answer the question myself.

Basically on and off some of our fish just keep disappearing with out any evidence. which i can only assume means that they are being eaten but by what ?

My tank is around 30 gallons at a guess as i have not measured it and comprises of the following fish.

1x ram
1x synodontis flavitaeniatus
5x Cherry Barb
2x Glowlight tetra
5x Zebra danio
6x scissortail rasbora
2x yoyo loach
1x guppy

Unfortunately i cannot remember when the problems started to arrise and on a regular basis i check the water in the tank and do a regular change. i never find any issues with the water quality.

I would be grateful for any help.

Thankyou.

Well unless they are actually leaving the tank in a literal way by jumping out (it can happen, even through tiny gaps) then fish are being predated upon either directly by perhaps your synodontis flavitaeniatus, which will be capable of taking small fish up to a third of its own length during the nights especially,it is capable of predation, and it will grow to 22 cm or so, meaning it is eminently capable of annihilating the other fish in your tank sooner or later. or youre experiencing disease , age, or water quality related deaths and the other fish are scavenging the corpses.

Yoyos will be excellent corpse scavengers, and most of the others will help themselves to some fish flesh quite happily once a larger fish has ruptured the corpse.

Aside from that, check all the usual, decorations with holes in or where things may have become trapped, filter vents that might suck fish up etc.

Chances are even if the syno is small, its possible you may have underestimated its ability to consume other small fish.

Thanks for the reply,

i have a sneaky suspicion that it could be the syno but have never seen any suspicious behavior but that doesn't mean as you say it's not happening in the night.

The fish that are still alive seem to be the ones that we have had for a while now or the ones that are on the larger side and show no signs of disease so far that i can tell.

perhaps i should try the syno in a separate tank for a while to see what the outcome is ?

Thanks for all of your help :-D
