killies(saltwater) from my other post, i did get them from the bait shop so i believe they were saltwater. Anyway i have them in brackish water right now, but when i put a couple in fresh water they took to it very fast. (and are fine)

Anyway, did i get lucky or can fishes that can handle all three kinds of water can adopt very quickly.

b/c if i do get more from a known saltwater source, can i add them slowly into freshwater or put them into brackish for a day or too and than add them to fresh water.

IMO I would put them in brackish first.

It's sort of a mixed deal of being lucky and that many killifish are pretty hardy. If I'm not mistaken, there is a species that can tolerate up to 4 times the concentration of seawater. In my opinion, fish aren't something you want to gamble with, so you mind as well acclimate them slowly to make sure they're fine.

Mainly it just has to do with osmosis, though fresh and salt water have vastly different contents (like the trace elements and minerals/salts). Water flows from areas of low salt concentration to areas of higher concentration to make up for the imbalance. Freshwater fish are saltier than their environment, so they have to constantly get rid of the water flowing into them. Marine fish are less salty than their environment, so they need to fight to retain water. Most fish are built to regulate osmosis a certain way, and that way only. Some can handle the transition between fresh, brackish, and salt water, and so gain an advantage in being more adaptable.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."
