| My Angels are ready to breed, how do I know if I am ready to be a Gramma? | |

I have been adding plants to my fish tank, and have some large pieces of driftwood, slanted against the walls of the tank. Now when I look at them, they are in the same position as some breeding plates are kept for Angel fish. My angels are all set to breed and are cleaning up leaves on two plants and doing the mating dance. I have set up a new tank for them, and I am going to move them in today. There will be a breeding plate in the tank, and a heater to maintain the temp. Any advice wld be appreciated, coz I am a first time Gramma! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Tall amazon swords, short amazon swords, and other plants to make them feel secure and give them places to move the wigglers to. Second, if you have never hatched brine shrimp read up on it and get the materials you will need together. If they do hatch and raise the fry you don't want to be scrambling at the last minute. Good luck, Mike |

Make sure the water temperature is nice and warm. Add a Slate to one side of the tank is also a good idea. The Angels will lay their eggs on the slate. You do not need to have plants in the breeding tank. Also do not add any gravel to the breeding tank. This will make ur cleaning sessions a lot easier. The fry can be feed EGG YELLOW. Semi Boil a small portion of Egg yellow, wrap it in a thin peice of cloth and dab it a few times into the breeding tank. The FRY will be JUST FINE. |

As for feeding the fry you will need to hatch BBS if you plan on having many survive, the egg yolk will work but you will only come out with 2-10 offspring. If water quality is kept up then BBS will produce many more offspring. Also, if you want to raise each spawn you will need numerous tanks set up,angles breed about every 2 weeks once started, so that means many fry at diffrent stages. So you can imagine what happens if you put them all together, the older eat all the younger. So it dosent work out so well.one last note, when the fry are born you will not be able to use a HOB filter, the fry are to small, the best way to go is a sponge filter. Go to google and search for breeding angelfish, and there are many good websites. |

I have got me a sponge filter. I have no experience in cultivating BBS, but I can get Infusuria (excuse the spelling) from a local fish store. Are their any freeze dried options available. |

There is a how to article at the top of this forum. If you have a good hatch you will need more tanks. 200 fry is possible and 150 fry is probable. Good luck, Mike |

Mike R![]() Fish Addict Posts: 593 Kudos: 830 Votes: 322 Registered: 27-Jul-2004 ![]() | You Lfs probably won't want them until they are .75 of an inch or so. that's going to take about 4 months, more if they are crowded. They probably won't want all of them at once so will have them for quite a while. You will need more tanks. If you are able to put them in an outdoor pond that works as long as it's warm. Good luck, Mike |

Perhaps you could borrow a tank from someone? Or maybe set up a temporary indoor pond? I have seen solid plastic (non-inflatable) wading pools pressed into service for raising angelfish - lots of surface area means much heat loss and evaporation though. |

As was said, most will want them to be dime sized - probably 5-6 months old at this point. One shop I frequent, he has offered to give me $150 dollars cash for 100 PEA size fry. I feel that is a very good deal, if I could get raising some fry in the near future, it would be a worthwhile endeavour. Would pay for the fish food after awhile . My shop would also be willing to buy 100+ baby angels every couple of months if I have them. So it pays to just talk to your LFS people and see what they say. The eggs were laid last night and I like the idea of the indoor pond. I have two huge bathrooms at home, and I think I will have to close one down and keep a tub in it until I can give the fish away. I have checked with some friends if they wld want a couple and am going to be asking people at work too. Will keep all of you guys posted. ![]() |

Do I need to add this to the breeding tank? I have a bottle of Rid All that contains Methyl. Do I add the recommended dosage of this medication, or should I get methyl from a shop... ![]() |

They are getting ready to breed again, saw them cleaning the leaf of a banana plant today evening. Hopefully, all will go well this time. ![]() |
