BBS can be bought frozen, but it takes a bit on hunting.
BS can also be bought frozen and are much easier to find.
Some stores sell live adult BS, but they are a bit $$.

lots of places sell BS eggs, but getting them to adulthood is harder than it sounds.

thanks guys

My spawning tank is pretty small, about 10L i think.
The tank they are in now is a standard 2'er, but its not completely full.

I am keeping some, at least 2 girls and a boy, but the rest i am selling to other breeders, or exchanging for other wild bettas

EDIT: and the plastic thing is a worm feeder cone, wonderful for feeding live worms, but it works really well on brine shrimp too

a few of you know my dirty little secret, but i'll tell the rest of you now... Up until recently, i have never had a successful betta spawn. Yes, thats right, i was fry-less.

The first spawn (Phoenix X Blush) became caviar, and the second spawn (Brutus X Anna) really drove home the fact that an ovipositor-looking-thing isnt always a sign that something is female... Yes, i tried to breed 2 males. Brutus was all into it, but thats another story

ANYWAY, my recent success isnt actually with splendens, its with Smaragdina

I recently aquired some wild caught males from Thailand and within 2 weeks of getting them home, i popped the one with the larger dorsal in with my female in one of those AquaOne acrylic tanks (not the all-in-one ones, just the box ones) and waited.

I let her out, and 2 days later put her back into her lantern for a big feed of blackworms. 2 days later, i fed them again, but didnt bother to separate them.
by the 8th day, i was fed up and went to remove them both, destoying the nest in the process.

I had just removed the male when i realised that bubblenests arent usually black and wiggly. DUH

well, i decided not to risk putting the male back in and just left them to develop on their own, and they did...

on the 8th day after hatching i went to try to clean the tank... which is harder than it sounds. Microworms are sticky, and the fry arent developed enough to move out of your way. I decided it was easier to syphon the fry out and then just wipe out the tank.
It was then that i realised how many i had, about 45

They had at least doubled in size in that 8 days. They were about 'small guppy fry' size. Now they are 'large guppy fry' size

I started them on frozen BBS yesterday. They arent as interested as they were in the MW, ut they seem to be eating. I figured a dead live food would make the transition to pellets easier later on.

Thoughts and feeling welcome
