Wow ! He really is shaping up into a gorgeous fish!!
You can send him my way if you want to "rehome" him!

Perhaps he is a dwarf turqoise rainbowfish?

Well, the wee guy is doing great and getting bigger. In fact, he's gaining depth on the underside, typical of rainbows. I'm waiting for the top to hunch.

I think it is a male because it appears to be showing colors more and more. The band is getting darker, as are the black tips on the fins. I'll try to post more pics this weekend or next.

Hey Sand How you doing? Three cats Lovely You will have to post a pic of them one day so we all can see. I did not get another cat after my sunny boy went to sleep. It was best i did not since i am allergic to them any way. P.S. Yes my rainbows are always darting around but i love em any ways

Just to add a note here about the color and such. I have several Rainbow fry right now, and I have been following this thread in comparison with mine. I too have been anxious about what he turns out to be.

Your little guy there actually looks like one of the clutches of fry I have, that is about the same size to larger than yours. It is, believe it or not, the Millinium Rainbowfish fry. Mine have that same blue "sheen" on them right now, and are at about 1-2 cm right now. My breeders are F1 from wild, so my fry are F2.

I do not have any Turquoise so I have nothing to compare them to there. But your little guy does not look anything like my Parva, Blehri, Zig Zags, Parkinsonii, or Trifasciata fry that I presently have also about the same size.

Any chance you could post a pic or two for comparison?

I just found this amazing pic of a turquoise. Makes me wonder?

http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwrainbows&1103811101

I should note that I do not always see the blue hue. Often enough, he looks silver with a blackish band. I was struck by pictures of the Goldie River in a book I have and wondered about that too.

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=www.fishprofiles.net/images/thumbnails/goldiei.jpg&imgrefurl=www.fishprofiles.com/profiles/fw/category.asp%3Fid%3DOthers&h=34&w=80&sz=2&tbnid=wDflskDTPKsJ:&tbnh=29&tbnw=68&start=4&prev=/images%3Fq%3DMelanotaenia%2Bgoldiei%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DG

Anyone see anything in my pic that would rule out either? Are there pics of this millenium rainbow?

I'll tell you that this little guy can really pack away the food. I don't know where it goes in that little tiny body. He easily whoofs down 8-10 Hikari Freeze Dried Bloodworms, then can eat about 15+ Hikari Micro Pellets a few hours later, followed by Freeze dried brine shrimp hours later. My bettas are only good for about 3-4 Hikari Betta Pellets.

Incidentally, I have this poll going if anyone following this thread would like to offer an opinion:

Aww nuts. I'm going to repost one of the pics here for comparison to previous pics, but I've posted a couple more in the poll thread.

I think it's possibly a M. Herbertaxelrodi. Also, look at the link for M. Herbertaxelrodi that I've provided in the poll post and view the two pics one up on the other, this one and the one in the link). If you look carefully at details in this one, there is a faint red showing in the tail fin - barely.

Where abouts in Canada are you Pete? I'm close to Windsor . In any event, he goes where there are others like him and it must be a car ride away. I'll be glad to put him up for adoption in a few months (free for a good home with others like himself) as opposed to putting him in a fish store if someone wants him

I don't think he is a dwarf Neon Blue. The general shape is wrong, the lateral line is to strong and the color is stronger on the top while M. praecox's color is pretty consistent and solid. The colors, turquoise in one picture and more yellow in another, and the dark fin edges would suggest M. lacustris(Lake Kubutu or Turquoise are the common names). But, it is really hard to be sure. M. lacustris are turquoise but will appear anywhere in the spectrum between yellow and green. There are a lot of rainbows that will do that though.

Hey - I've found two pics that kind of resemble him and they are ones you've brought up.

Here they are and I can see a little of both in them.

http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=1052

http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=1050

I must admit, those latest pics I posted yesterday are really starting to help define him. I've been feeding him lots of Hikari Freeze Dried Brine Shrimp, Blood Worms and Daphnia. In fact, I need to cut back because he won't take the Hikari Micro Pellets the way he did before. The little bugger spits them out, unless he has gone many hours without eating. He needs those micropellets for other nutrients that will help bring his colors out

I'm thinking I may need to place him sooner than I thought because he is getting more skittish with age. I have found that early fry have less fear. As they get older they become more fearful, or should I say, cautious.

OK, people - I have some better pics now that he is changing. He is still like the size of an adult white cloud, but filling out well.

You'll note in the first pic taken today, he appears to have blue tones. However, in the second pic, it seems different. Maybe that's why they call them rainbows. They seem to change color depending on how you look at them. I can say this much....when I look at him under light and without light, he looks more like the first pic - blue tones.

Also, the fin tips are black - at least they appear black.

Is he resembling anything more this week than when I last posted?

Diane-
We could take him once he reaches about an inch, although bigger would of course be better. I can also talk to a couple of coworkers about him and see if anyone would want to take him home... that way, you know he's gonna get a really super awesome place. Just a thought.

One more bit of info, the Barred Rainbowfish (if we are using the same common names) is Chilatherina fasciata. You can find a picture at the same site as C. axelrodi.

It is a rainbow and looks like a Melanotaenia species. It is very hard to ID rainbows at a young age. The colors don't show up until later and often change as they mature. I'd bet its not a M. lacustris or M. Praecox or M. Bosemani though. Its head is Melanotaenia shape but its markings right now look like Chilatherina axelrodi.

That is right now though. A month from now they may look very different.

I can't get the link to work but check out this site:

Interesting about the Turquoise. Is this the one you are talking about. This is melanotaenia lacustris:

http://www.thatfishshop.com/j_fish/melanotaenia_lacustris2.jpg

Can you find a pic of the "barred" version you speak of?

Even if he is a dwarf and would fit into my 20 long, I'm concerned that it would be cruel for him not to be with others like himself. His behavior is very diffferent from the white clouds, rasboras, and two slow moving guppies in my tank. He darts around with all the hyperactivity of 10 year old after a cola. Having said that, I don't know if he would make my peaceful fish nervous. I think some of his hyperactivity may be nervousness associated with not being in a school.

I'm thinking it would be best for me to find a home for him, but I need him to get big enough to take to a fine pet shop in Lansing, Michigan to which I visited this summer.

Sarah - how big would this rainbow want to be for Pruess to take him on? He's about the size of an adult white cloud now. If he is some kind of dwarf, how long does it take to reach full size? How big do dwarfs get so I know when he has surpassed that?

Definetly a cutie!
I would guess he isnt a Boesmani though. Looks like he might be a Turqoise Dwarf or Perhaps a Barred Rainbow. Definetly of the same genus as the barred rainbow.
Are you gonna keep him? Hes a nice specimen.
I agree too, many rainbows have red on the operculum. All my Barred Rainbows do.
