Find out where the plants in your nephews tank were bought. And then find out if there were any rainbows in those ponds/tanks the plants came from. As I raise plants and sell them, as well as buy them, I often get "additions" to my ponds and tubs, as well as give "additions" to others who purchase my plants from ponds that have fish breeding in them. As rainbows lay their eggs in the plants, and plant roots, they often get moved to a new home before hatching. I spawn rainbows in my tubs outside every year.

As for the ID, you will not be able to tell that untill it becomes older. Hopefully, it will be male and give some better ID through some color. If female, then there are only a few that can be IDed for possitive.

Thanks!

He's getting bigger, the little bugger , just over an inch now. Must be that diet of bloodworms for breakfast, Hikari MicroPellets for lunch and Hikari Daphnia for Dinner. I feed him two more times in between on my days off.

I wasn't expecting to see color yet, but I think I'm seeing some at the base of the caudal fin for the first time - yellow! Its hard to see because he won't stand still. He has had a neon blue/turquoise hue - very faint near the front, along with the three vertical bands near the mid-section. The area running horizontally from front to rear is becoming distinctly darker. I wonder if I do have a bosemani :88).

I do not believe there were any bosemani or other rainbows in the tank the duckweed came from, but this doesn't mean something else wasn't transferred to this tank with an egg on it and he hitched a ride again . It's really the only contact the frog tank had with any outside sources within the 3-4 weeks before I spotted him in the larval stage.

Ooo - I haven't been this excited since I opened a box of Cracker Jack for the first time as a kid and went digging for the prize . I just wish I could keep him and get some buddies for him.

I will try to add more recent pics this weekend now that I'm seeing changes and he's going through some explosive growth.

There weren't any plants or animals added to that tank for about two months before you came in to the store, Diane. I have absolutely no idea how you ended up with a rainbow from a tank full of tetras. Name him "Enigma" or something...

Well, I'll have to figure that my nephew was adding "stuff" to the tank from a local fish store where he use to go on his bike to buy crickets. One time, he did add a feeder guppy and thought I would be angry. I told him that some critters do need live food and being that he had this tadpole/frog, I didn't feel it was unreasonable for him to use feeder fish, if he was comfortable with it. That was months prior to this incident, but maybe he just didn't want to tell me that he was still taking "stuff" from that fish store and maybe the egg hitched a ride.

The wee guy is doing quite well and continues to grow rapidly. No further changes yet.

OK, here are some pictures as of today, Thursday, November 19th, 2004. I would estimate him at about 1.25 inches (3.75 cm) and maybe slightly larger.

I'll post several shots here.

Note the red by the gills. I have noticed this pretty much from the earliest days. It seems more intense. Ammonia and nitrite are 0, and nitrate about 5-15. I don't know if this redness is natural/genetic, or if it is something else. Are these nitrates too high for such a young fish?

And another pic, with a not so bleached body.

And an other shot of one half of the 10 gal for size perspective.

I wouldn't worry about the red... looks pretty normal for a fish of this size. I think his operculum's just a little more see through than you expect.
