Hi,
I bought a small (40 L) all in one tank for my daughter the other day. You know one of those ones with the filter and light all built into the top. I could not not believe my eyes when I read the instuctions. It tells you how to set it up and add the water etc and then it says
"Let the aquariun operate for 24 hours before adding fish" - so much for the cycle!!!! No wonder so many poor poeple have trouble with their first tank. I must admit the the salesperson at the LFS made sure that I knew all about it and about water aging etc.
The instructions go on to say
"Clean the sponge & activated carbon bag, bio balls and filter box under tap water" OOPPS there go the bacteria!
"In the event of changing water, only change 25% of the water and fill with tap water".

"IN THE EVENT" of water changes!!!!! I always thought water changes were essential not just a 'in the event' which makes it sound like it might need to be done.

Hello!!!!!!

Thank goodness for the friendly folk at fish profiles.com to help put poeple straight when the tank manufactures get it so wrong.

Yeah, the instructions that come with new tanks sometimes are a riot to read through. Usually whatever manufacturer made the tank, when reading the instructions it will tell you to add all sorts of chemicals and junk ( stuff they make as well). " If after setting up tank water becomes cloudy, use Super Water Clearer (tm)" and all sorts of other bad information. " Adjust ph to xx using Super duper ph control liquid." That and they push the use of carbon full-time in the filter, along with frequent changes in the filter cartridge.

Plus in the picture on the box they always have 10x the amount of fish that could possibly fit in the tank. I helped a friend set up a 12 gal and he couldn't understand why he couldn't have 30 fish in the tank. After 4 months he is still fighting me to get more fish.

if they where telling everything you will have to do for real then most beguinner would be discouraged and woud'nt buy the tank they make it appear more easy than reality so many peoples will get tanks thinking it's nothing to keep....
