My oldest son (12) is currently cycling his 20g with danios. He wants a BN for the bottom, which is fine but I'm trying to put together a list of potential middle or surface dwelling tankmates for him (we don't live together ) It's been a long time since I've done anything with danios so I'd like to get some help please. I mentioned platies or guppies. I know fry won't survive with the danios but would there be a problem with the danios nipping at the guppies? Another option would be some sort of gourami, perhaps a dwarf or honey. Again, potential nipping?

Small cichlids...would a single krib be ok? Are Bolivian rams as delicate as German rams?

So the BN is a must-have but any other suggestions would be great He's quite knowledgable and has had a 2.5g running for over a year now I love passing this on to my kids, the 20g is the 3rd tank they have now

I would go with two dwarf gouramis, and maybe some hatchet fish.

I am not sure, but i think that dainos can be nippy. If that is the case, then male guppies and gouramis wouldn't be compatible.

Bolivians are hardier than blues, yes.

Another option would be tetras, cherry barbs and corys. BNs are cool too.

Are there any favourite colours. it would be so cool to have a tank with you're 2 favourite colours for all the fish.

Hope this helps.

pencilfish could be an option, also most tetras like the mid-bottom tank levels; how about a few hatchetfish? They are pretty active (maybe replace the danios with them?). Also bolivian rams (though pretty) don't go up to the surface much either. It also depends on your preferences, an active tank versus a peaceful tank.

Hope that helped, Jess

I would avoid the 2 dwarf gourami idea as they can be aggressive towards each other and other tankmates without enough room.
