Go for a Dwarf Gourami. They have very beautiful colours & stay on top.

I have seen a couple of peppered corys about 3, 3 and half inches without the tail. My sister gave me two, and they were quite small, but are growing rapidly in my 90g. They have gone from about 1 1/2 inches to 2 1/2 in about 2 months. They are in a 90g tank though, and I think that the bigger the space a fish has the quicker they grow.
I think a female betta would be nice for your tank, there are some very nice looking ones out there, and I have heard that they have just as good a personality as the males.

zebra danios, white cloud minnows or endler's livebearers would also look nice.

Thanks for the info about the net breeders, Sneaky_Pete. So now that the male betta in a net is definitly out, I am leaning towards a female betta for the entire tank. A dwarf gourami is still a possibility, if I can find one that I like.

As for the peppered cories, I wasn't sure what I was buying at the time. The first two I bought were labeled as spotted cories. If I could restock this tank, I definitly would go with pygmy cories. But that is not an option, I can't return them.
As for their size, my largest one is just about 2" with the tail. And I've had this one for about 11 months. I know the majority of the fish profiles list the peppereds at a max of 2 1/2". But, I just can't amagine my cories growing much larger. The older ones seem like they have been the same size for a few months.

What is the maximum size that people have experienced from a peppered cory(Corydoras paleatus)?

Frankly, I'd try Glo Fish.... Small, active and definite surface dwellers! --- Although they are a schooling fish, you could get by with 3.. I know I did!!!! (Well, up until I took them to my lfs to reduce the overstocking of my community tank! --- I didn't even learn about overstocking until I found this site! Makes me wonder how much longer my fish years back would have lived..... I've always had PLENTY of filtration --- and my fish have always done well --- even when I overstock.... I suppose that supports Gary Roland's statement which he made in one of my earlier thread topics, that you could greatly overstock with plenty of filtering - but you leave yourself wide open to disease, etc. and could even have your entire tank wiped out... So I do wonder how much longer my fish would have lived.....

If you are considering those net breeders, I wouldnt bother. Not only will you not be able to even see the betta after about 3 days, but you will constantly be bothering it by having to net it out, and clean its net , then put it back in. I had one of those net breeders. It lasted about 1 month. The frequent washing required to keep it almost see-through destroys the meshing. Also, once the meshing turns brown, nothing will change that.
Not a good plan. As for the bettas fin getting shredded by the filter intake, perhaps you could wrap a peice of pantyhose around it, or put a sponge over it. Dwarf gourami would not have that problem as they do not have long flowing fins, and in my experience (had 3, now 2) they are a strong hardy fish. I am not sure about your choice of pepper corys in a 10g tank though. They are among one of the largest species of corys, and will soon outgrow that tank.

I dont think thats a very good idea, it kinda makes the tnak look bad. Also waste, dirt and who knows what esle collects behind the net on the side thats on the glass, so that needs daily cleaning. So IMO I dont really think it a good idea.

OK, I am now thinking of trying a male betta in this tank again. But this time I am thinking of using this. http://www.thatpetplace.com/Products/KW/net%2cbreeder/Class//T1/F50+0291+0281/EDP/11313/Itemdy00.aspx
Has anyone kept a betta like this?
What's everyone thoughts about doing that?

Not sure what other prob. you're referring to re. bettas but the suggestion of getting a female betta is a good one. The only issue I had at first was when we did water changes and she would try to go hide in the back corner the splash from the filter would whip her around. We very carefully did more frequent and smaller changes for several weeks to get her used to them but once she got more used to her new home she was fine.

One the other hand I have 2 dwarf gouramis in my 55g and they will play in current from the filter and in the bubble wall with no problems at all. They are very personable and have beautiful coloration. I would strongly recommend one for your tank.

Just my opinion, hoped it helped some,
Beth

The one problem I had the the betta was with his tail being pulled to the filter and shreaded. So getting a female would solve that. But, the other problem is still unknown. And that problem effected 4 different bettas(3 male & 1 female). I'm thinking it has something to do with my water source, so until I figure it out, I'd rather not kill any more bettas.

I really like the killi and Endler's suggestions. I just have to hope some store around me carries them. Cause paying shipping for just 2 fish isn't to appealing to me.

As for a dwarf gourami, I'm sure I could fish them, but because they are closely related to bettas, I'm a little worried they might have the same problems.

I was originally thinking about a couple of male guppies. So that's still a possibility. As are the cherry barbs.

I guess I have some searching to do. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

for a standard 10 gallon tank with 6 peppered cories. One or 2 small fish, would something fit?

What about 3 or 4 male guppys? There'd be no chance for them to breed, they're not all that expensive, and they're pretty

A dwarf gourami would look great in a tank with peppered cories. And since gouramis (and bettas) are labyrinth fish, they need to come up to the surface to breathe. A gourami or betta will def. stay near the top of your tank and both come in many beautiful color variations. If you want more than one fish, I think a pair of killis or cherry barbs would make a good choice too.

What was the problem with the betta? You could always try a female betta.

I like the dwarf gourami idea, or maybe a few male guppies or Endler's? Pair of cherry barbs would work, they don't have to be in schools.

You could look into killifish as well. I'm not sure what the deal is with keeping them with cories, but I don't see why it would be a problem.

I agree, a dwarf gourami would be great in there. They are peaceful, and they usually hang out near the surface.

A dwarf gourami would fit. But only a dwarf cause the opaline or pearl ect. get to big. But a nice dwarf with 6 peppered cories would look awsome.

If you want a fish that likes the top of the tank, why not a betta? They stay small, look great, and have a good personality.:%)
