I will be setting up a 75 gallon next week and need some stocking ideas. I have three gouramies that I will be adding to the tank first so I need compatible fish.

Thanks for the ideas!

I have a golden and two blue ones. I'd like to have a variety of fish, but the would have to be fairly peaceful. I was thinking about the tricolor cichlid, rainbow cichlid, acei, and maybe the blue acara but I would have to do more research for water quality and such.

I had a pair of rainbow cichlids in with a few adult blue gouramis with no issues. They're really pretty fish, too. Mine just picked a corner of the tank that was theirs and left all of the other fish alone. I had a bristlenose plec, about a dozen Beckford's pencilfish, cories, and glowlight tetras in with my pair.

Since it seems like you want larger fish, I'd probably go with something like a few schools of Buenos Aires tetras, diamond tetras, gold barbs, or something like that.

I wouldn't put a tricolor cichlid in with gouramis, though. They get a -lot- bigger and more aggressive. I have no clue about the acara, but I'm sure someone else here has experience with them.

Thanks for the advice!

I was debating whether I should combine the two 10 gallons with the fish in my 20 gallon when I get the new tank set up. I wasn't so sure about putting the tetras with the gouramis.

This new tank was an unexpected, early Christmas gift. I just can't decide what to do!

Thanks for the help!

Acei are African Mbuna and are not community fish.

You could add a couple schools of tetras, barbs, or rainbowfish to the tank, as well as some loaches, cories, and or a smaller pleco.

A pair or two of Rams or Apistos would make great centerpieces.

What fish do you have in your other tanks?

Here's what I have in my other tanks...

10 Gallon:
4 Cories
6 Neon Tetras
3 Redeye Tetras

10 Gallon:
2 Rosy Tetras
2 Lemon Tetras
2 Black Phantom Tetras
4 Neon Tetras

20 Gallon:
2 Blue Gouramis
1 Gold Gourami
6 Cories

My plan, as of today, is if I decide to dismantle my tanks I'll put the Gouramis in the 75 and combine the tetras and cories in the 20 gallon. I'm still not sure.

I hope you don't mean put all those tetras in the 20g. That would be very overstocked.

You should move some of the tetras to the 75g. Tetras are schooling fish and like to have a group of their own kind. 2 of a type isn't enough. You could put 2 schools of 6 in the 20g. The 10g tanks are really only big enough for one school of tetra and maybe a centerpiece fish.

RedEye tetras get pretty big, so I'd move them to the 75. And the Black Phantoms as well. Then you should increase each type to 6.

So you'd be left with:

10g
6-8 rosy tetras

10g
6 lemon tetras
4 cories

20g
10 neons
4 cories

You could add another school of 6 to the 20g and that would free up a 10g, but I'd keep the neons together and move 2 schools of fish to the new tank.
