Maybe a trio of cherry barbs, they have nice color. Or a small school of harlequins?

Cherry barbs are a bit shy and IME keep to themselves. We currently have a pair with a betta in a 5.5g with no problems.

For the most part the other small schooling fish won't bother a betta either. I've kept neons, lemons, glowlights, and harlequins with bettas. The only two types of fish I personally wouldn't recommend are danios and tiger barbs.

Hi there,
Did you cycle the tank?
Is it fully cycled now?
I would not use a betta for cycling,
nor would I add any more fish until the
tank is fully cycled.

it wasnt cycled but i took the filter pad out of my 29 gal, and its clipped to the inside. im keeping an eye out, but i think im gonna put him in my 29 till the cycle done. then bring him back. hes the only one in right now. but im gonna get some harleys today and put them in. i have a empty arrowhead gallon bottle. i cut and openings on the sides and silliconed nets in the openings(allowing water to flow through). i think ill use this to contain the betta while the 10 gal cycles

I don't think the barbs or harlequins would bother ghost shrimp but there's a chance the betta would eat them. Some people have luck keeping them together, others don't.

Have you considered an ADF?

Bettas and barbs will definitely eat ghost shrimp.

I keep Lambchop rasboras T. Espei in with my ghost and cherry shrimp with no problems.

I've kept my betta with both neons and harlies, even a few ottos and they all get along very well. Even with my rubbernosed pleco and yo-yos with no problems. I love the ten with the betta and neons, although I had set out to find some cards originally. Hard to find cards here in the chicagoland area for some reason. hmmm, perhaps its a seasonal thing, I know I've seen them in the past.
