I have a new 28 gallon bowfront that I want to set up as a freshwater tank and I can't decide what to put in it. I'd like to plant it fairly fully, and other than that I have no idea. I really like oddball fish that you don't see every day, so I was thinking maybe puffer or knife. Any ideas?

None of the knifefish species can live in such a small tank permanently, so if a larger tank is not in the plans then they would not be a good choice. Small species of puffers are a much better choice.

If you don't go puffer, the South American leaf fish or the African butterflyfish are two other oddball fish that do not get extremely large. Both species are ambush predators and may be less likely to feed on simple flakes, the leaf fish especially.

I've considered the leaf fish as I've had them in the past. If I got a knife I would just raise a baby BGN until it was big enough for my bigger tanks so size wouldn't be too much of an issue. I believe I read somewhere that they grow fairly slowly, is that true?
