I recently purchased a used 55 gallon tank with a penguin 330 filter for 80$ (so-so deal). I purchased a stand at walmart for 80$ and a hood for 60$.I was wondering if anyone had any stocking ideas besides the one here, and if id need anything else to start up and run my tank.

2 keyhole cichlids
2 bolivian rams
12 neon tetras
8 corys

any other stocking ideas are encouraged! thanks alot

You will of course need a heater, and a thermometer. I think your current stock list looks good, but I would say you could probably go for as many as 20-30 neons in a 55g tank, considering the other occupants are mostly lower water level fish.
I think a large group of neons would look superb in that setup. Not adding them all at once of course, but over time. Another thing that would look great is say 12 neons and 12 black neons. They kind of counter accentuate each other nicely.
Also, read up on the cycling info in the Getting Started forum!
Good luck!

I feel like I'm a broken record, but cardinal tetras are hardier than neons, slighly bigger, and their blue and red stripes go from nose to tail.

Otos are EXCELLENT algae eaters. I have 5 in my 55g, but I also have a clown plec. As far as algae goes, the tank is spotless.

Also what about a male and female pair of kribensis? All cichlids get aggressive when breeding, but I think a 55g would be large enough to let them have enough room.

I would say a nice bristlenose cat for clean up, rainbow fish are nice for color and maybe some kuhlis loaches, they are fun to watch.

Hey Fish,
I probably have the same exact stand...seems like assembly was a bit rough, because of the size and weight in my opinion...(still haven't put the doors on... it's only been...uh never mind how long it been) Mine seems to be holding together great...I also have the 29 gallon (doors are attached ) and have had it now for 18 months/2 years or so...and still going strong even after 2 moves...best of luck no matter what you decide to put in it...Heidi
