Also i dont want a livebearer. Would like somthing nice to look at. The tank is a 40 uk gallon and well planted with live plants. It is a peaceful tank. any ideas ?

How about honey gouramis? They're a lot like dwarf gouramis but are a different color. I've been wanting a pair of those for a while.

Pearl gouramis would work in that size tank, very nice looking fish too. Cherry barbs are a bit smaller but have good color and like to be kept in pairs.

You know in advance what I'm going to suggest ...

Anomalochromis thomasi Cichlids.

If you can find them, they have a mass of virtues and almost no vices. About as close as you can get to a 'pacifist' Cichlid, gorgeous in breeding dress, good parents, hardy, adaptable to a wide range of water chemistry parameters, and remain a modest size compared to most other Cichlids (not quite a true Dwarf, but close if you consider Apistogramma agassizi a Dwarf Cichlid - they're about the same size). I had them as a teenager and now that I've found somewhere that supplies them, I can't wait to add them to my collection again (waiting for the passing of the dreaded Empty Wallet Syndrome - sigh).

A pair of those would make a fine addition to your aquarium provided you're not looking for an Asian biotope fish.

German blue rams would work. Very atractive fish. Also Badis badis. If you could find dario dario it should work.

How about some apistogramma? Those are very pretty fish and I believe are very timid.
