I would do an Asian biotype with loaches, rasboras, barbs, and gouramis. It could be well planted with java fern, java moss, anubias, crypts, aponogetons, and various other asian plants.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

For a tank that large I would:

1. Get some large South America or Central American cichlids as they get large and just have a serious attitude.

or

2. Get some Cytocara Moorii "Blue Dolphin" create a colony and maybe a pair on some Frontosas in it too. Never had them as I haven't had a tank large enough, but people just LOVE C. Moorii and they're gorgeous fish.

I'd go with some big bruiser cichlids. CAs come to mind.

Well, considering he mentioned plants in his post, I doubt those setups would work. Big bruiser cichlids don't mix with plants.

For a 150 gallon tank, I would have 8 Pictus Catfish(Pimelodus pictus), 10 Boesemani Rainbowfish(Melanotaenia boesemani), 6 Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish(Melanotaenia praecox), and 6 Red Rainbowfish(Glossolepis incisus). All the color you could imagine with interesting looking fish.

I'd get a bunch of female American Cichlids. 1-2 Jack Dempseys, 1-2 Green Terrors, 1 Jaguar, 1-2 Convicts, possibly an Oscar. I'd definately get all females because they are less territorial and aren't quite as big, so I'd be able to fit more in the tank

Floating plants might not be ripped to shreads by cichlids. Hornwort and duckweed are 2 floating plants that come to mind. They might rip up hornwort, or try to play tug-of-war with it. I doubt they'd be able to do anything to duckweed...it reproduces so fast they wouldn't be able to kill it all

Goldfish! The personality of a cichlid, the beauty of, well, a goldfish, and the fancies are quite safe with a grand list of plants as long as the plants are very healthy (just like most fish, they're happy to strip bare any plants that are failing). Who needs those steenkin' cichlids?
