I received a used fish tank..I believe it's a 60 gallon.
My friend had it set up as a saltwater tank.
Is it ok to change it over to freshwater and can I use the same filter?

Thanks in advance.

What kind of filter is it? Just make sure you scrub everything and get rid of any salt that may be in the tank anymore.

Clean with warm water only- no soaps or chemicals.

If its a canister filter or power filter its fine- just clean as with the tank and buy new filter media

Thanks for the quick reply clownloachfan & BM

It's marked Aqua-Tech 30-60

I think this is the one ..the link is to a pic of the filter on ebay

I had a nice 60 gal tank but it was many many years ago.
I don't have the manual for this filter..I believe all I need to change are the blue pads monthly?

Depending on your load of fish, it is suggested to change the filter cartridge every 2-4 weeks. The way i do mine is leave it in for 4 weeks. But at 2 weeks, when i am doing a water change, i sqeeze and rub off all of the debris i can into the siphoned tank water in the bucket. Then i put it back in the filter. This gets rid of the fish waste that will decay and turn into nitrates but it saves the beneficial bacteria. At the end of four weeks i take the cartridge out and rinse it in tapwater and clean the filter. Filter cartridges may be reused a few times saving you money.
