Ok, i've had angels since i've gotten a fish tank, and i'd suggest no more than 4. As for take mates (and some people will think i'm crazy) i've ALWAYS had gourami's , red tail black shark, pleco, school of tetras, cories, long finned rosey barbs, and a betta. They all get along fine. Right now in my new take (55) i have 2 andangels and the rest of the fish mentioned and they are all happy and fat. I have alot of slate and rock set up like caves and tunnels. also my take is fully planted with about 15-20 plants including a philodendrum believe it or not. I have it set up with the rock in the middle and the plants in forests on either side. I have no problems. As for ph which at least for me has sometimes been a problem, i use something call SEACHEM regulator and its FABULOUS i've had no problems since i switched to this chemical for ph balance.

Moonlights are purty. <3

Also, kissers would do great in such a large tank. I wonder if anyone here's ever kept a goramy? Those things are kind of ugly :-X.

Oh, gouramis would go great!

Since you are getting a fairly large tank, I'd stick with bigger gouramis, like the snakeskin and moonlight. Just make sure that if you go with the moonlight, tank mates are not aggressive, as moonlights are one of the shyest and most peaceful gouramis. Angelfish would be fine with 'em.

sure could
My Dwarfs and Pearls get along just fine with my angel.
You could do pretty much any type of gourami you wanted, but I have heard that gold, opaline, and blue gouramis are the same species and will fight, so opt for one of these 3 no more is best i think. You could go for say 4-6 pearl gouramis, 1 opaline gourami or gold or blue, 3 Dwarf Gourami, 1-3 snakeskin gouramis, 1 moonlight gouramis, or combos of any of these!

Yeah, I agree. There are always differences in particular individuals.

I dunno Klee. I think thats rare. Perhaps before you got them they were underfed?
My 2 buenos only nipped in the first 2 weeks I had them. Ive had them for 9 months now and they dont even show the slightest bit of aggression. Not to my angel even when he was little, nor to my gouramis, nor any of the danios I have. I heard in general they were mellow as adults and nippers as juveniles. Besides I think mine are too busy eating my pennywort to bother anything alive that fights
Strange how fish differ from group to group eh?
Makes you wonder if there can be any such thing as "fish profile" thats totally true as personal experiences vary so much!

Oh boy, Buenos Aires tetras. I introduced some full growns into a tank with those long-finned breeds of zerbas, and the fins on those things were obliterated within hours. The female BAs were particularly fond of snapping at any incoming danio she saw. I doubt they'll resort to nipping the fins of anything as large as a full grown angel, and they're pretty fish, especially in large schools.

I definetly would not do neons. I got given 3 neons, and bought 11 neons, had 14, now down to 10. I thought Sneaky Pete the Angelfish was still too little to eat neons, I guess that small saucer sized Pete is bigger than I think he is cuz he snapped back 1 I saw and 3 I did not!
The neons have now moved into my 25g tank.
I would suggest
4 Angels,- perhaps you will get a pair perhaps 2 perhaps none.
6-8 Buenos Aires Tetras, Are very peaceful once mature, may nip a little as juveniles, but grow quickly past that. They are a nice schooling mid water tetra, larger so no way they would be in trouble if the angels spawned.
6-8 Rainbowfish of any variety, again large enough to be safe from the angels, and beautiful as well. great schoolers.
6-8 Loaches of any kind. I would reccomend Queen Botia, Angelicus Botia, Weather Loach, Clown Loach, YoYo Loach, etc etc. Botia are great fish, fun to watch, and if you end up with snails somewhere along the way they will keep them in check.
Oh and Softened water will not raise PH but will lower PH and Hardness over time. Good plan for SA fish.

IMO, it's a waste to keep neons in a 125, as they'd look just as stunning in a twenty species tank. And if you're complaining about tigers being nippy, oh boy, you don't want to see what congos are capable of.

I just purchased a 125 gallon fish tank and I would like to evantually get angels for it, but I'm not sure how many I could get and I'm not sure what fish to complement them with. Also, does adding softened water to a freshwater aquarium raise the ph?

In a 125 gallon, there is MORE than enough room to keep 7 angels, even if a pair does form. In my opinion, with a 125, you could go with larger cichlids, such as severums and fstivums, which both compliment the angels nicely (fests are a bit nippy when young, though).

My breakdown would be:
1-2 severums
4 angels
3 festivums
2-3 BN/Rubbernose <- for strictly sanitary purposes.

Not sure how well the severums'll do in pairs, though.

Also, if you do want tigers and angels together, in such a large tank, they should do fine, provided the tiger clan is large enough and there's a good deal of plantage (plastic or otherwise). I find it unfair that tigers get such a nasty rep, as some other suggested fishes, such as black skirts and rams, can be equally nippy on bad days.

You asked what other fish might complement the angels? I can tell you that I have a 55 gallon tank with just one huge 2 yr old angel who gets along just fine with 4 australian rainbows (who are very active, but don't bother or scare my angel in any way), 1 male pinapple swordtail (who thinks he's a rainbow, as he schools with them) as well as a bristlenose pleco and 1 pictus catfish. They all get along great, with thick fake plants, driftwood, etc.

2 yrs. ago I had 4 cories in the tank, but when I added the pictus catfish, he hogged the food on the bottom and scared the cories, and the angel kept "kissing them" on their heads to scare them away from whatever food they did mangage to find. So alas, poor cories were moved to antoher tank where they are much happier nowadays.

Angels are beautiful. Enjoy!

I'd stick with 4 angels. That way, if a pair forms, there is still enough room for the other angels to be safe. You could have a gorgeous SA tank. Something like:

4 angels
12 cories (all 1 kind)
5 blue rams (2 males, 3 females)
4 bristlenose plecos
30 rummynose tetras (or pretty much any other kind of tetra)

That heavily planted with SA plants would be gorgeous!

No, soft water doesn't raise the pH of water.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

I would only get 2 angels cause if you get 6+ you will most likely have a pair1 unless you want a pair

I would also avoid the tiger barbs. I'm not sure of the water requirements, but a nice school of some type of rainbowfish would look awesome with those angel fish especially if you are going to use live plants.

True. The tigers would nip the angels fins but I would think a big tank that is well planted and when tigers are in schools they usually don't bother the angels. Or get rams.

it is stupid to put fin nippers with angles.

You could fit around 10, and like mentioned a school of clown loaches (i would say 3 - 5)
