ARGHHHH it was my mistake that i trusted her to take care my pure betta Well i went a small trip for 3 days and i left my mother to feed my betta .. well i told her to give him just 2-3 small flakes NOT more.She told me from the phone that the betta was dead she didnt had a clue how that happened but wen i returned home i saw my tank FULL of uneaten flakes]her answer was : BUT TWO FLAKES AREN'T ENOUGH !! I JUST THROW HIM A SPOON OF FLAKES THE MORNING AND ONE THE NIGHT , HE WAS EATING VERY HAPPY SO DONT BLAME ME!!! GRRRRRRRRR
Well now i have an empty 5 gal tank....can i put there a female betta ? and would any fish be ok with her in this small tank?thanksss

That's so sad. What a crazy world we live in, where we can't trust our own mothers to watch our fish! A female betta would be fine in there, you could maybe add 2-3 cherry barbs in with her. Good luck!

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

So sorry for your loss. Your mother meant well. Please forgive her sometime soon. She really didn't know what she was doing.

well yes i understand her ,its my mistake too....he could survive with no food for three days but i think but i couldnt imagine that this would happened.
I put in my 5 gal a very strong filter that creates a quite strong water movement..will that be ok with a female betta?If not is there any fish that i could add that likes water movement?Its a heavy planted tank also so they'll have spots with no current to rest i think

Sorry for your loss.

3 days without food wasn't very long, you should have fed him before you left & as soon as you've arrived.

I'm very sorry for your loss. This is a dilemma we face with having fish, who will care for them while we are away. I think when the time comes for me to go somewhere, I will make premeasured packets of food for the caretaker I choose.

Sorry about your betta. Also, I had the same thing happen to me, but with a twenty gal, and a missinformed aunt. That was a bad experience. For the record, my mom feeds most of my tanks. She's better at catering to the gastronomical needs of my fishes than I am.

Never have people who are not experienced with fish take care of your fish. Period.

Sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss...killed with kindness.

My mum hears me talk about illness from overfeeding she knows less is better than more. She even knows that I am so vigilant about not overfeeding that some days are foodless days. She doesn't like those days, she feels sorry for the fish on those days...another big softie at heart.

One idea for when you are going away is to leave a pill container with days of the week with food portions. Only feed from that day's container..do not over, feed do not pass go, do not collect $200 and DO NOT FORGET WHAT HAPPENED IN GREMLINS....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~ My fish blow kisses at me all day long ~~~

Next time you go away, leave daily feeds in seperate packets that the 'responsible' person looking after them can simply empty into the tank. This can be time consuming but should ensure living fish when you arrive home.

I left for a month... Leave the amount of food the fish are suppose to have per day(per week for my case) in bags, film canisters, or pill bottles. Hide the rest of the food. I packed it with me leaving 3days extra food behind in case they really overfed and ran out too early for the fish to go without.

couldn't you just point it at a wall?

or i guess you could say its an excuse to get a new tank with fish that don;t mind current!
