ya dont type in caps is annoying. A full grown oscar needs a 75gallon just by himself. My friends oscar has grown from 1.5in to 5in in about 3months. That being said i would house JUST the oscar in the 30gallon for mabe 5months max and get a new tank when he gets about 5-6in.

my fiancee had a college roomate who had two oscars that it took four years for them to get over six inches,, did they have a special kind that rkae longer to grow or was she simply mistaken on the lenth of time?
also thank you to all of you who have posted so far.

Possibly she was mistaken, and very very very likely they were stunted - keeping fish in a too-small tank leads to stunting, shorter lifespans, rampant disease, and death. Besides - people sometimes make it over Niagara Falls without a barrel, but does that make you want to jump? Keeping even one oscar in a 30 is just asking for pain and suffering on the fish's part.

Piranha - nope. These shy schoolers really need a 6' tank and a group of companions, and even then they're a lot of work.

going back to the oscar question,

i gradualy worked him up to a 125usg. first i had him in a 20usg until he was 4 inches, then i moved him into a 35usg until he was 6 inches, then into a 55usg until he was 8 inches.

this was all done within a year!

but good luck on what you decide to get

I think you'd like an African Butterfly Fish. Just make sure you don't keep them with any top-dwellers. Maybe keep them with a school of corydoras or a BN pleco.

No prob topher... I just wanted that person to know there regs. I started my angles and discus in a 29, because LFS said all I would need. So I just had to purchase a 90g. I would have rather jhust started that way. It was a pain in my tailfin. I know you were only trying to help, but make sure you tell the whole story. everything cool toph. Have fun everyone.

bracguy, I was suggesting that for the first year, what the thread was about, you would have to upgrade as those fish got bigger but for the first year that would be ok.

As Littlemousling said, it has happened before. A website very similar to this one got sued for saying bad things about a pet store. So in the interests of better-safe-than-sorry, it is site policy to disguise names of pet stores if saying bad things about them.

ANYWAY...

Newfish, this won't be what you want to hear, but your plans aren't really very good ones. Oscars grow very quickly, you run the risk of stunting them if you keep them in too small a tank. When you exchange them at the LFS, they're most likely going to be keeping them in a small store tank, then they may not sell easily because they will be more expensive than the babies. Moving from tank to tank can be very stressful too. So really, it's not going to be good for the fish. Also, it's very easy to get attached to an intelligent, personable fish like an oscar, they become more like pets and therefore very difficult to give up - I know I could never, for example, give up my cat in exchange for a new kitten. The same goes for some of my fish that I am attached to.

I'd take the oscars back now, while they are still small, and get something that can make the 30 gallon a more permanent home. It'll be worth it in the long run.

The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. - Oscar Wilde

Don't talk bad about any stores. There are legal reasons as have been mentioned already. This is site policy!

Well, I don't think master adam will be arrested in the middle of the night because he set up a website. It's not like the sole purpose of the site is to bash Petco or Petsmart.

People have sued - did the Petswarehouse lawsuit not get as much attention here as it did on the APD? A grand number of people were sued because of people on that list reporting to each other their bad experiences with the company. A number of people were forced to settle, and the whole thing was just a scary mess. Here's the thing: a corporation can afford to sue almost anyone, because individuals rarely have the funds to fight. People usually settle, and it works out to the (short-term, anyway) benefit of the corp. I know my parents were still paying off bills 20 years after the fact of a suit they won - imagine if they'd lost! It's a real issue, and not one to get on Adam's or anyone's case about.

This topic is going to get shut down.

I bet petco/petsmart/walmart or any big giant company like that is not going to bother suing a small website. It just wouldn't make sense.

Apparently, there are no free speech rights on fp because it is a family oriented site.

It's so FP doesn't get sued by some disgruntled company or other. If you're saying "Petco is wonderful!" great, but if you're saying "I've never been in a -------- that I liked," blur the name.

why? we have freedom of speech we can say what we want. they have no right to sue

I would still go with the wrestling half beaks, and some small gobies. The clown goby is not an ocean fish, like many gobys it is so harty it can go fresh, brackish, or marine, also lets hope we are talking about the same goby. There are over 3000 and many have very similar names. ask your LFS to help you find brackish clown gobies, they only grow to 1.5", or so they are white, with a black strtipe on face and black tips on fins, (at least as juvis) just ask to see a list of gobies, write down the names you are interested in and ask jeves, or do a search that is what I do. Brackish fish are awesome!!!

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS GIVEN ME ADVISE, I SPOKE TO MY LOCAL MA AND POP FISH STORE AND BOUGHT TWO OSCARS AND A GREEN TERROR, BUT I ALSO HAVE IT WORKED OUT THAT IF MY OSCARS GET OVER 4" BEFORE I GET MY NEW TANK THAT I CAN BRING THEM BACK AND EXCHANGE THEM FOR TWO NEW BABIES AGAIN,
THAT WAY THE FISH STORE MAKES MONEY AND I DON'T HURT THE FISH. SEEMS LIKE A WIN WIN SITUATION.
