i found some good sites for these guys, but what i still cant make out. are they the eel polypterous? or is the ornate bichir a different eel?

Polypterids (bichirs and ropefish) are not eels. Ornate bichirs are Polypterids. Ornates get big, though (24"+). If you have any more questions on ornates, feel free to ask...I have 9 of the beasties myself.

we have one at work that is about 2"

i have an emty 20usg long that is empty, but im getting a 55usg next monday.

how long could i keep him in the 20usg?

in the end he will be put in a 125usg

2"-4" ornates here cost $30-$40 typically...yours sounds atypically expensive, but t could just be your location and the availability of ornate bichirs there. In 8 weeks, you can expect your ornate to be between 4½"-7".

A combination of wood and rock hiding places and plants, with some wide-open area for swimming. Sand or fine gravel is best.

what would be the best tank size for these guys and best tanks mates when he is an adult?

im aslo going to free up my 35usg, i know this will better so how much bigger would he get with the extra 15usg?

125G+ for adults....preferably 150G+. Tankmates include datnoids, African arowanas, larger but reasonably peaceful cichlids (like frontosas), etc.

The 35 should do you an extra 2-3 months.
