Ok, like me, I'm sure some of you would love to open your own fish store. It is probably a dream that will never come true for me but has anyone made that step? To combine your favorite hobby and work seems awesome to me. Any experiences or stories?

Been there, done that....it was great, nd would still be, but we got stuck with an obscenely high, assumed lease that drained us to death.

I'm sure it would be a wonderful idea. Not only would you be able to learn about fish, and order whatever fish you wanted for your own tank, you would be 'working' as well. My mom always tells me that enjoying your job, and being happy with what you do is more important than money. I'd have to agree.

It's something I've always think of it. And I guess like almost all the cities in the world, unfortunately there is not a good one, so it could be the first one with good stuff and nice fishes and surely We'll help all the newbies to understand what it's fishkepping about, sound good but....... thre it comes the issue, Education, most of the people do not want to learn, sad but true, well at least here where I live it would happen, probably I could have a bunch of layal customers but not enough to mantain a bussiness like that

Just my 2 cents

There's been a whole series of columns in FAMA by a guy who rana few fish stores - he's quite down onn the whole thing, really. Personally, I wouldn't - just look at the bottom-of-the-barrel employees in local stores, the overabundance of guppies, Angels, tiger barbs, etc because that's all anyone buys (I know the same three or four tanks of Tanganyikans at my LFS have more or less become adult communities; no one ever buys so much as a single fish from there, they barely even go down that aisle), the ginormous rents required in any area that'll attract customers. In fact, think of it this way: how many pet stores have shut down in your area in the last ten years? I've seen, in the five suburbs around me, the collapse of two fish stores, a pet store, and a dry goods pet store. Not fun (although I did get some cheap tanks out of the deal).
Nice in theory but not always so great in practice, and all that (although I hope Toitis gets back into it, I'd come up to visit that store!).
