Go with the shellies for sure. (If you can find them, that is) They're very interesting fish, and really fun to watch.

In a 10 gallon I don't think you'll have enough current to keep hillstream loaches happy. I think you'd get the most bang for the buck with the shellies.

Go with the shellies

Hillstream Loaches.

Great little fish. Interesting personality. Plus, you'll have the special distinction of possessing Joe Potato's favorite fish.

I think they are the best looking out of the three. Definitly go colourful. I know your mom will like it better.

Trying to decide what to put in my 10. :%)

My mom has caught MTS and she wants a bunch of new tanks set up! I know most of you would wish this would happen but. . . errggg. . . she likes to look at them and let ME do all the work. Oh well at least I am finally able to try a few projects that I have been thinking on for a while.

So far I have narrowed it down to 3 choices. The tank is already cycled with all of the equipment I need. I already have sand substrate, 30 watts CF lighting @ 6700 K, penguin mini, can add a powerhead, heater, whatever, I have everything laying around my house. :%)

All I need to buy are the fish, plants and other decorations, rocks, shells (if needed), etc. I even have some of the decoration stuff laying around.

pH out of the tap is 7.4 GH/KH moderate but can be altered. I'm a budding chemist and I don't mind messing with it for the right fish. I already mess with water chemistry on my SA tank so it's not a big deal.

ANYWAY. . . here are the options:

OPTION 1. 2 Hillstream Loaches (which will be moved into a new 20 gallon tank with tiger barbs after Xmas)

OPTION 2. A few Shellies! My LFS actually has a very nice selection. Example meleagris:

OPTION 3. Julidochromis orneatus (my lfs has them and I think they are quite pretty):

meleagris: got it from one of LittleMouseling's posts (hope you don't mind, thanks)

I've done the gourami thing many many times, and to be honest I haven't seen any that really caught my eye in the stores lately. Sparkling gouramis may be on future wish lists though.

they are oh so totally awesome, get a whole bunch now and get to know them before you set them loose in the big tank.
