The vast majority of those who buy dyed fish aren't aware of any pain or deaths resulting. They just think that the fish look "cute" or "cool", and purchase them. These are the folks who don't research their stock, and often end up killing their own fish through poor care. Then some of them go back out to the store and buy replacements for any fish that croaked, including the dyed ones. |

I've seen it on Giant Gourami and, recently, on Tinfoil Barbs. There is also a new "Glass Tinfoil Barb" that also has, sadly, hit the markets in unnaturally dyed colors; I haven't yet seen one that's actually natural. But that last link Cali posted... Now, that's heavy. -------------------------------------------- The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. |

I can't guarantee great shots since my digital camera is a piece of junk, but I'll try to get a few in-focus pictures for you. I'd really love to see the project after it's finished. ______________ Cake or death? |

If you might have a good digital camera, you could take them yourself - provided the employees don't run you off It sounds like an interesting project! |

jasonpisani *Ultimate Fish Guru* Posts: 5553 Kudos: 7215 Votes: 1024 Registered: 24-Feb-2003 | Well, i'm not sure if it's going to be on the net, but i'll try to convince them in doing it. I want pictures, so we can show them to the members & try to convince them in not buying them. We just started our Dyed Fish Campaign & i am gathering as much information as i can, so i'll do some write ups & give them for free to our juniors & seniors members. Unfortunatly, this week a large quantity of Dyed Oscars was imported by a LFS & they're a real pity. http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

There are undyed "blood parrot" cichlids, but all of them are hybrids. They could be viewed as two crimes against nature, since many of the fish are both hybridized and dyed. Obviously not the fishes' fault though. The only truly natural parrotfish are the saltwater parrots. |
