And then there are shy fish that come out more in a tank with dense cover when they feel more comfortable like the keyhole cichlids I once had. People say they're shy, but they were some of the friendliest fish because they knew if they got spooked there was something to hid in/behind nearby. It was fantastic

As Reiko said
. Personally I would rather "hunt" for fish in a heavily planted tank. Better yet, watch your fish hunt for something in the plants.

Guess what gives me the biggest kick;
Watching my favourite fish swim up and down the front of the tank. OR
Not see my favourite fish for a couple of hours and then see him emerge from a thick dark bunch of plants all happy and contented looking.
Yep, it's the second one.
Still get a thrill watch my school of rummies bright noses dart out of a bunch of cambomba noses a-flashing only to dive into the wisteria and then come racing out of the Hygro

Right now I would call myself a plant person. I just started on both fish and plants. While I do enjoy watching my fish I spend much more time and money trying to get my plants to grow. I just recently upgraded my lighting to about 4 WPG and added DIY CO2. Personally I would rather "hunt" for fish in a heavily planted tank. Better yet, watch your fish hunt for something in the plants.

Yeah I think I lean to the green side.

A plant only tank is like an aquatic flower garden...people that plant flower gardens don't need to have animals running around their garden to enjoy it

For me it's all about the fish. I use artificial plants for decoration and to establish territories in the tank.
Of course that's inside. Out in the pond the plants rule.

It's all about fish for me, but I love the plants because they are alive, different and beautiful. I couldn't imagine having plants without fish (boring), or fish without plants(sad). I've seen pix of discus breeding tanks w/no plants or gravel and the poor things look like they're in jail. Molly said it! Look at nature, rivers, oceans, plants, fish... it's symbiotic, they need each other, but balance is good. *stepping off soapbox*

Puffer-archer: Can you please tell me where I can find info on plants that live in brackish water?

Natalie: I found plant weights on ebay. Supposed to hold them down so fish can't pull them up. Looks like she's out but might be posting more:

Mostly fish, but I'm moving into the plants now. I've been sort of keeping plants for the past five years, but just recently got compact flourescents for a 10. So I'm looking forward to keeping some of the higher-light plants than what I have now. Well I have amazon swords, but they were sort of shrinking, now they should grow! I'm not so into plants that I'm going all out with CO2 added (besides what the fish release) or absolute precision, but I grow them well enough to look nice. (no lace plants or anything for me)

I used to be an all fish person, but now I'm about 50-50 as well. I spent nearly $200 on a DIY hood with a very powerful reflector (and very expensive bulbs) just so I could grow plants.

I don't use CO2 or any fertilizers, but my plants are growing fine. I'm sure the 2.5+ watts of light per gallon is enough to keep them happy. And I'm always on the lookout for nice looking plants.

I want to get rid of my orange-finned loach though... He's always digging up my chain swords!]

I couldn't stand having a fish tank without plants ... but I can't handle having a plant tank without fish. The problem is, knowing I can create something like this:

makes it difficult to want just a fish tank. But knowing I can make these

happy makes it hard to focus on planted tanks that won't include them. How could I possibly love one above the other? Plants are about fish are about plants, etc.

How about this: I'm a Water-Person!

Bensaf nailed it.. "Now it's more of a 50-50. Got into plants for the health and well being of the fish and it became an obsession equal to that of keeping fish.".

from what i could see, some people focus on the plants in their heavily planted aquariums (where you can barely see the fish, and are just for color), and others are fish persons, interested in their fish first and add plants for their fish'es enjoyment.

so, what are you?
or maybe you're a different kind of person?

Fish would win for me, though I definitely enjoy the plants. I have a difficult time with live plants because of the type of tanks I keep, however, I'm currently experimenting with plants that will survive in brackish water, I'm hoping it goes well because plants to improve the look of a tank.

Hmmmm. Interesting question. If you had asked me 6 months ago I would have said fish without missing a heartbeat. Now it's more of a 50-50. Got into plants for the health and well being of the fish and it became an obsession equal to that of keeping fish.

Definately the plants take a lot more work then the fish. But a heavily planted tank presents a challenge that adds a new dimension to fishkeeping. It is not neccessary to focus on one to the detriment of the other.Quite the opposite. Having kept non-planted in the past I can see the difference in the fish. In a healthy planted the tank, the fish behave more naturally (never see a fish just swim aimlessly from one side of the tank to the other anymore), they more active, healthier and quite obviously happier (if spawning activity is anything to go by, very happy, it's like a Roman orgy in there most mornings), water problems and disease seem to be a thing of the past, and it's a rare and shocking event to lose a fish.

So for me the two go hand in hand, and I can no longer imagine keeping fish in a non planted tank, no matter how much extra work involved.

To answer your question I plead the fifth.......

I guess I'm a plant person. I believe that if you have healthy plants you'll have healthy fish. I don't mistreat my fish, mind you, but if I have a fish tearing up my rotala macranda, it's getting moved. ( the fish, not the plant).

If I could only have one, I'd enjoy a plant only tank more than I would a fish only tank I think.
