I love plants and would definitely be more interested in them if my mom and sister wouldn't always whine and complain. "You're getting MORE plants? Why do you need more? You have too many already!" *glances at her medium to lightly planted tanks* They just like to whine. *nods sagely* I love my fish though, especially my betta girls. As exciting as seeing a plant do well is, there's no substitute for the enthusiasm the girls exhibit when I walk into the room. ![]() ~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~ |

Started out with fake plants and slowly ventured into real. Now I only have one-other than my betta tanks-that isn't planted. I like the look of real plants, the variety, their helpfulness in the tanks...but I'm still a fish-person. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

It was a challenge, and I had to learn about the cycle and other stuff for the benefit of my fish. After I learned to keep my fish alive and happy I noticed that my plants would die off faster than my fish. Another challenge. Now I am learning about lighting, CO2, ferts, and how to keep the pesky alge at an acceptable level. I'd assume it would be a real challenge to keep a FULLY planted tank looking good. Right now I'm just learning with enough plants so that my efforts on the CO2, lighting, and ferts aren't wasted. So to answer your question, I have 3 tanks solely devoted to fish and their happiness. I have 1 tank that I tend to check for new plant growth more than my fish. Critical Fertilator: The Micromanager of Macronutrients |

THO, i CAN grow aquatic plants, but i cannot row terrestrials.... so i am slightly planty. |

I go through this argument with my boyfriend all the time. He loves heavily planted aquariums, both real and plastic. He piled the plants in one of his 29g tanks and you could never see the fish because they would hide all the time. Then the fish, for some unknown reason, started dying off but he wouldn't find the bodies until days, sometimes weeks later. Trust me, a rotting betta is not a pretty site ![]() On the other hand, I prefer a tank that has enough plants and decorations so the fish have plenty of places to hide, but not so much that the plants take over and become the main focus of the tank. I definitely do agree that a fully planted aquarium is pretty, but in my personal experience it seems that only stores with such display tanks are able to make it a success. In fact my boyfriend works in a fish store and they have an absolutely gorgeous fully planted display tank with neons and rams. My boyfriend eventually lightened up on the plants in his tank, but decided to put quite a few live plants in another one. It looks really good, but there are always broken off leaves floating and he never does a gravel vac because, well, he can't. I guess this is just one of those arguments that will continue on and on. It all really boils down to matters of opinion. |
