Hi,
I bought this fish as "One Spot Catfish" as suggested by the person at the LFS. Can't find much of this name on internet. Please help me ID it.

The photoes are dark as they were taken in dim light. The fish only comes out when lights go out.

after a bit of searching, it would seem that you have yourself a Horabagrus brachysoma, or a two spotted catfish. it doesn't seem that fishprofiles has a profile on them, here is a link to one on a different site. http://www.fishaholics.org/show_fish.php?FishIndex=17, i am interested in how this fish turns out for you, good luck. i will do what i can to write a profile for this fish.

Great...thats the one!
The fish is highly predatory. I only discovered it when my school of 9 tiger barbs started disappearing one by one. Then I introduced three young CAEs, only to find them gone in the morning and these cats with swollen tummies
Eats pellets too but prefers live food. Never touches any vege material.
The max size of 18" seems to be a bit of exaggeration. I have them for four months now and they've grown from 2 to 4 inches. The largest specimen I saw was somewhat around 6 inches and that was two years old! Looks like the other claim about its maximum size being around 8 iches is to be valid.

i wasn't sure, but i bet in an extremely large tank, or evena pond they could grow quite large. I have never even seen one of these before (as far as i know), but as yours grow you will find out more about them and you can update my profile for them. good luck with your new fish.

[ink=Planet Catfish]http://www.planetcatfish.com[/link] is your one stop shop for all things catfish.

Here's their profile on Horabagrus brachysoma:

Planet Catfish info

Oh and here for comparison is the closely related Horabagrus nigricollis:

Planet Catfish info

According to Planet Catfish, H. brachysoma can reach 17.7 inches, and they're usually pretty much spot on with their data (though there are one or two species where this isn't the case - this is, however, a rare occurrence with Planet Catfish).

I think I have a pair of Horabagrus brachysoma. I must stay its a slow grower when compared to most of the other catfish.
It always feels good to have some something in your tank thats not very common

Yea but at the cost of it eating your other fish, especially the god-like almighty Tiger Barb? Shame shame.

Actually, this is probably THE most common bagrid available on the market, not that there's anything wrong with that.
