My lfs has a nice 29 gal setup, with food, filter, net, gang valve, pump....*mind goes blank* for $99.00 (I know there's a bit more in it, but I can't for the life of me remember what now.) Anywho, once I'm established in my apartment, I plan to buy that tank, build a stand, and then cycle it.

I was thinkin that I could have like 6-8 Tiger Barbs, and then maybe some bottom feeders. ^_^

I know that I want at the very least 5 Tiger barbs, but the rest is negotiable. I just don't know what would be a compatible (if any) bottom feeder. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think this is the first time I'm venturing away from Bettas. SO yeah....Help anyone?

Wow! That's a great price! I have 2 blue rams, and I love them. I'm not sure how they'd get along with the tiger barbs, tho. I have a pearl gourami that's about 3" right now. He's very peaceful and a beautiful fish. Again not sure how he'd be with barbs. I also have another gourami, a gold gourami, who is kind of a bully. A bit more agressive than the pearl. That might be better with the tiger barbs. I've never had tiger barbs but they're kind of interesting. Let us know how they work out.

I'm partial to "All Glass Aquarium Co."...

If they're the maker then that's a good price especially if the hood and light are included.

Tiger Barbs are ok if they're the only fish in the tank but tend to be a real nippy trop with other species.

Ok, so how does 4 bamboo shrimp, and 8 tiger barbs sound?

I don't know what brand of tank it is, but I saw the same one at petco for $125 (tank and hood alone).

I'd stay away from "kits" alot of times they come with UGF or a underrated filter, you'll likely do better buying everything seperate. IME UGF's are just trouble....anyway...

8 tigerbarbs in a 29 is likely to leave you understocked....I'd keep it mostly barbs though, should be able to increase the school to around 10/12, but it'll depend on filtration and maintence.

It does come with an UGF, but I wasn't going to use it. I was planning on getting a better filter and selling the UGF back to the same lfs. That lady is really nice, and really informative on a lot of things. But I think she's a little off on some of the things she says. She swears that UGF's are the main filter EVERYONE should use and that any other filters are "backup filters". :%):%)

Just ask Billy! He met her! Anyways, the kit is worth it for everything else that's in it.

Babel, you said it would depend on maintanence and filtration if I wanted 10/12 barbs....what exactly are you talking about? What would be a good filter to use, and such?

Well...29's have little surface area, so the more that you can agitate the surface the better....not so good for live plants.

IMO tanks should have filtration that cycles the tank 7-10X/hour.....so for a 29 we're looking @around 203gph-290gph. An AC 200 as the minimum or the equlivant. Not all fish will appreaciate the water current provided by that much filtration with a HOB filter, although I have a feeling tiger barbs will enjoy it (my other barbs do :%)).

My belief on stocking is to consider, adult size, activity level, schooling tendencies, and nitrAte levels. Tigerbarbs dont' get very large, they're schooling, and active but should be okay in a 29 (IMO a 30 gallon would be better since it's longer). The only remaining issue is the nitrAtes. If they're continually low you could increase the school. Lower nitrAtes are seen in well planted &or well maintained tanks.

heres a thread i started with some ideas regarding color-based themes... nobody replied to it BUT i think there are some neat ideas ^_^ might want to get a second opinion if you decide to use all those because i'm not a total pro on figuring out proper stocking

A tank of tiger barbs would be nice. Many people keep an RTBS with tigers but I'm not sure if a 29g is large enough for one

Maybe post a question regarding tiger barb tankmates in [link=Cyprinid Corner]http://www.fishprofiles.com/interactive/forums/forum.asp?id=5" style="COLOR: #FFFFC0[/link].

Congrats on the find though, sounds like a good price. And keep us posted on what you decide to stock with.

:%)phew! There's a lot in your post that just got me all congugled Babel. :%)

My 29 gal, isn't a tall tank. It's really not that much smaller than a 30 gal.... At least, I don't think it is...

Anyways:

"IMO tanks should have filtration that cycles the tank 7-10X/hour.....so for a 29 we're looking @around 203gph-290gph. An AC 200 as the minimum or the equlivant..."

I have no idea what all those numbers mean Babel. :%):%) I'm still a newbie at all of this technical stuff (maybe one of the reasons I've preferrred Bettas ^_^ :%))

But anywho, once I figure out what filter I can/should use, then I'm putting that tank on layaway. ^_^ My lfs gets tiger barbs in every two weeks, and they're always tiny! It's exciting. ^_^ Anywho....^_^ Thanks for everyones help!

I've had a RTBS in my 29 with tiger barbs since jan. They do well together but the RTBS is quickly outgrowing the tank and is going to have to be moved soon.

In terms of size, a 29g is actually 2" taller than a 30g.

I forgot to say good luck with your first non-betta adventure I kept bettas for years before my husband got my a 29g kit as a surprise Christmas gift, I've been addicted ever since
