I have four pygmy puffers in my community tank. They like to go move vertically up and down along the sides of the glass of the tank. Anyone has any ideas why they do that?

They're bored. They need a busy tank as far as decorations go and lots of plants. They also shouldn't be in a community tank. They will start killing your other fish. They need to be in a species only tank. Otos and shrimp are just about the only tankmates they will get along with.

I am new to puffers, but I am now obsessed! LoL

Anyway, I have a 20 gallon Dwarf Puffer tank. They may be small, but they are very active and nippy fish. As they mature, they will show that behavior more, I believe.
It is advised they have a very visually complex tank, broken sights and what not.
Also, I know some stores sell them as eating flake food, but it is a very common exception that one of these will eat flakes. Live or frozen food is a must, along w/ very small snails.

A good site for info: www.dwarfpuffers.com

PM me if you'd like more info.

Yeah, I would definitely agree that they are bored. Add a lot of plants and decorations and they'll probably stop cruising the glass. However, like they said, they really don't do well in community tanks. They may be ok now, but they have this nasty habit of randomly deciding that tank mates are food, or at least their fins. This can lead to a lot of problems, and it's better just to avoid the whole issue and put them in a species tank, perhaps with some ottoes or shrimp.

Check out that site, there's a lot of good info there!

Mine will occasionally do the glass thing, but it is usually the same one. He is also the one who repeatedly tries to swim into the stream of the filter output...it is quite comical to watch.

I have fed my puffers flake food for about 7 years. The same two puffers that is. They love it. I would think that too many high fat foods would be harsh on your puffers over time. I feed the full grown ones flakes at least twice a week and the juveniles get them every other feeding. I have never owned a puffer that wouldn't eat them.

You are very lucky your puffers eat flakes!! I had 1 taste one once, but she spit it right back out!

I feed mine bloodworms, brine shrimp, and snails. But I am also going to try some other live foods soon. And if they aren't impressed with what I drop in, they just look at me like "where's the good stuff" haha

Sorry, late night post.

Anyway, good luck with the puffers.

I'm surprised as well, my puffers have never accepted flake food. They would always give me an evil glare if I even thought about it.
