I have a python and I was just wondering, when you do water changes and you are taking water out, and cleaning your filter media, if you put a bucket in the sink under the drain for the python and use that water in that bucket, would it be safe? Because it also drains tap water.

if you dont want tap water comming out, you can turn the water off, and your python will work by gravity (as long as the tank is above the sink) and you can fill the bucket up that way.

When I clean my tank I only take out 1/3 - 1/2 of the water, then replace it with tap water and dechlor. If you reuse the syphon water you are just putting all the gunk back in the tank and your gravel vac was pointless

I wouldn't be reusing the tank water. I would be using it to clean my filter. I just don't want the tap water coming out to. So if i shut the tap off, it will still suck stuff out?

If you're cleaning the gravel, you're taking out water, and then you're replacing that water with tap water right? So why is cleaning the filter with tap water an issue?

Is there something I'm missing?

Eric go to the hardware store and buy a four foot section of plastic hose that is the same size as the one on the python. Then take the round tube off the end of the hose you already have and hook it to the four foot section. Start a gravity syphon and you can pull tank water out seperately. Or if you have enough hose on the python just cut a four foot section off the hose you have now.

If the faucet is below the tank level, then technically it should siphon out if you shut the faucet off.

But if the drain is not at much of a different height, you're not gonna be able to get much suction for the gravel vaccing.

gartenzwerfe - I don't think ericm wants to clean the filter in tap water as tap water contains chlorine etc that will kill off the beneficial bacteria
