HOw long would you quarentine new fish for before adding them to a populated tank to avoid deaths among your healthy fish? I've been going by 3 weeks but my hubby thinks thats too long. What do you think?

most things will show up within 2 weeks, but anywhere between 2-4 is standard

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

ha ha babelfish. I dont think they'll let me keep a tank at my cash at walmart but I could always give it a try. lol. Thanks for your input. I think I'll stick with 3 weeks and tell him to suck it up and be patient.

I personally dont quarentine.

We have had our tank up here for 15 years, and have never quarentined fish, and we have never had a die-off from adding a new fish.

Also, a LFS that is kinda in my area (I have only been there 2 times) says that they have done studies, and say that quarintining is a waste of time, because it made no difference what-so-ever.

I dont acclimate my fish either, same goes with the above (my tank, and the LFS's studies)

are you kidding? lets see those "studies" that says a fish is fine when you dump it into a tank with a pH of 8 when it just came from a pH of 6.5?

Not Quarentineing is a risk some people aparently are willing to take. Not having a heater is also a risk that some people take. If you don't have a heater are you guaranteed ich, not necessarily, but you're increasing the fishs risk of getting it.

Are you guaranteed disease if you dont' q-tine, not necessarily but you increase the risk of it.
To say that someone shouldn't do q-tine, IMO is just irresponsible. I have a very hard time believeing that it's harmful to the fish .

Well we didn't quarentine before but we recently took in about 75 guppies from a co-worker of mine who's moving. Every tank they were placed in had substanial loss amoung already established fish. The fish we received were carrying a bacteria that wiped out about 50 guppies, 7 cories, a weather louch, and one of my hubby's prized balas (he took that death hard)so now we play it safe. I played with fire and got burned, so now I carry a fire extinguisher.

i never said not to q-tine fish, it was just my opinion.

Also, the heater in my tank doesnt work, and my fish are fine, and they dont have ich.

Good luck when you lose power for 3 days vict.

Goodness Snugz, that was a tough one, you'd think hubby would be a bit more patient after such a loss .

my house flooded, and we lost all of our heat for a week.

My tank was down to 72 degrees some mornings. I have never lost a fish.

I usually quarantine mine for just a few days, make sure they're healthy and then net them into the tank. used to just float the bag for about 30 minutes, but then when i opened it everything dumped out, and now I'm battlin snails.

I quarentine for 6 weeks. I have had disease show up 3 or 4 weeks later. I find that parasitic diseases take a bit longer to show up.
