I was just cleaning my sisters goldfish tank and i was using prime and i noticed a really bad smell coming from the bottle. It was like a sulphar/ rotten egg gas smell. I then got my new bottle out to check that and it smelt the same!

Is this normal?

Thanks!

Taken directly from seachem's site:

DIRECTIONS: Use 1 capful (5 mL) for each 200 L (50 gallons*) of new water. For smaller doses, please note each cap thread is approx. 1 mL). This removes approximately 0.8 mg/L ammonia, 1.2 mg/L chloramine, or 3.3 mg/L chlorine. May be added to aquarium directly, but better if added to new water first. If adding directly to aquarium, base dose on aquarium volume. Sulfur odor is normal. For exceptionally high chloramine concentrations, a double dose may be used safely. To detoxify nitrite in an emergency, up to 5 times normal dose may be used. If temperature is > 30 °C (86 °F) and chlorine or ammonia levels are low, use a half dose.

If the bottle gets really low the dregs sometimes have high concentrations of sulfur and look brownish-yellow. The smell would probably be pretty noticeable then. But yeah, a little smell is normal. It's like Melafix.

Mine always smells from the first day I open it and I don't notice a difference when I reach the end of even a very large bottle of prime that's been around for months. Although I do have this habit of automatically shaking everything before using it. I always shake the melafix bottle, make tons of foam, and then have to set it down for 10mins and force myself not to shake it next time before using it. Doesn't seem to cause any harm to the prime though. Might even be a good idea to shake it occasionally.
