I know that testing for GH gives a result that encompasses KH, and that the non carbonate hardness is found through subtracting the KH from GH, but I'm stumped on the profiles. When this site, and most others, give a gh/dh, is this the measurement minus KH (which I'm suspecting) or is there some reason that KH is included? For example, the water here is kh 8/gh 12, so would the profiles consider GH for 4 or 12? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

This from Petaquarium.com http://www.petaquarium.com.au/default.asp?id=10#carbonate

"General Hardness has nothing to do with Carbonate Hardness"

That should reduce your confusion (I've been there)
