in my 55g. (inhabitants are in profile) I have a crazy algae growing, very green in color, but rubs off of stuff easily. Its on the glass, the rocks, the wood, the fake plants... who/what will eat that?

72 gallon bowfront:Tanganyikan Lake set up
75 gallon: A. Baenschi trio,Cyanotilapia Afra Cobwe(4), copadichromis trewavase, protomelas sp. tangerine tiger(breeding pair)

I have a common pleco that does a great job along with an apple snail.
but through my interaction with this forum I am now partial to the ottos (otocinclus)
http://www.fishprofiles.com/profiles/list.aspx?term=Otocinclus

plecos do a great job but they get so damn big especially for a 55 gallon..at least thats what I am now conviced of I am looking for a home or an exchange at my LFS for the pleco.

Ottos remain very small compared to a pleco, and IME they eat algae very quickly!!!!

Can you describe this algae a little more? Does it have a slimy, sheet-like appearance? If so, it's BGA, which is bacteria not algae, and no fish will eat it. See if you can find similar looking algae from the pics here.

Fortunately BGA is quite easy to fix (remove manually) and prevent. Main culprit is usually either low nitrate level (in planted tanks) or insufficient water circulation in some parts of the tank. You can dose Potassium Nitrate or Flourish Nitrogen for the former, or add a powerhead to increase circulation for the latter. Good luck!
