Can an aquarium work well without any live plants? I'm wanting to create a sort of Hippie-esque, psychedelic themed tank in a ten gallon with either some female bettas or some guppies with neon gravel and caves with bright plastic plants. Would it be detrimental to my fish and water quality to leave out live plants, or would it work? Thanks!

Nope, live plants are not essential to an aquarium, and in a 10g tank, they wouldn't make much of a difference anyways. Good luck on your design!

Thanks! I've already got it planned out landscaping-wise, I just haven;t decided on the fish. I don't know whether to go with darker fish, like female bettas, or really bright fish, like guppies.

It takes several plants to do much to the tanks environment, and a 10 gallon won't be able to fit many plants.
