(Hope I have picked the right forum)

Hi

I love rainbow fish

My LFS don't normally stock them

But they had in some rainbows in - and I had not seen any of these anywhere before

I purchased 6 last week end as they were cheap for rainbows

They listed them as "Ellegant" or "Ellegance" - can anyone point me to a site where I can read up on them.

Thanks

Regards

D the R

I have never heard of any called by that name. You should ask where you got them, if they know the scientific name. As for a site, this is one of the better sites on Rainbows;

And I moved this to the rainbowfish forum for you.

a pic or discription would be good, since they are being crossed with eachother common names may be created all the time.

The only elegant rainbowfish I know of is a marine species. Presumably its just another crap made up pet shop name. Send a piccy of it and we'll ID it for you. Probably a celebes rainbow or similar, there was a lot of taxonomic confusion about rainbows a decade back and some of the species common names in circulation got confusing, but there really shouldnt be any "elegant rainbows" except for marine species now that the taxonomy has been sorted out.

Sorry unable to send a pic

But can descibe them as simular shape to a scissor tail (slightly broader)but the tail fin is stubbier, they are a shimmering silver with a black line from mid to tail, presume they are "babies" and at present are the same size as an adult scissor. They are swimming mid to surface, shoal and doscile

Hope this helps you to help me

Thanks

(I'll see if I can post a photo)

In addition

With regards to the "black line" when it ends by the tail it is finished of with a black spot

Does it look like any of those I listed in the link above? Many of the Rainbows have a black stripe on them. Many of them that have the black stripe, can make it fade away when fully colored up. This is why the black strip does not help much with the ID of this particular fish. A pic would be about the only way we could even try to ID the Rainbow you have.

Actually dave, I just noticed that the UK has had a glut of Madagascan Rainbows in at the moment, I bought some just over a week ago, since theyre not too closely related to the other australian rainbow species a lot of people will have had problems identifying them. In retrospect your description sounds like a female. The ones in at the mo are red variants, but the female actually does look like it has a spot immediately prior to the tail, although this is probably just the discontinuation of the lateral line thats a bit fuzzy in these individuals from this specific population. They are primarily silver and black, and theres very little red on them, practically none on most of the females.

What shop was it dave?
