I've got two 55 gallon tanks my uncle gave me, both have done their cycle and I'm already in the process of stocking one with 3 ropefish and 1-2 dragonfish.

The other tank is going downstairs where my mother will be able to look at it, so I'm thinking community with maybe an angel, but I'm not sure how much space they need or what you can stock angels with (I'm a freshwater dummy ^_^)

Dimensions of both are 48"x12"x21"

You could fit a pair of angelfish in a 55 gallon, probably more, too. Most fish will go ok with angels, except for small tetras, which angelfish eat in the wild. Definitely do not include neon tetras, or anything around that size. Also, don't add any fin nippers, because they would love to bite those long angel fins.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Dragonfish? What kind of Dragonfish? Arowana and Violet Gobies both are called Dragonfish. Also, the Ropefish get pretty long and IMO would outgrow the 55 gallon. However, they do grow relatively slow.

There are a lot of fish that can be kept with Angels. Pretty much what you have to watch out for are fish that large Angels could eat (small tetras), fish that would nip fins (ex. Tiger Barbs), and of course fish that are just plain aggressive or would eat the Angels. You have a lot of choices... :%)

Violet Gobies ^_^

Ah, they're small ropefish, only about 4" right now, I'll have my own house and a bigger tank by the time they'll need one ^_^

Instead of angelfish... what could I put with an oscar?

Mom does want a angelfish, a pair would even be better.

With an Oscar in a 55 gallon, you're pretty much limited to almost nothing. Some even say the Oscar outgrows the 55 gallon and a 75 gallon is more appropriate, since Oscars do grow over 12".

4" Ropefish? I've never seen Ropefish that small, only Bichirs... Violet Gobies may eventually get longer than the 55 gallon tank is wide as well. Though they probably won't need more than 4' in tank length, the width would preferably be wider to accomadate their adult length.
