Well, my tank is looking daggy.

I'm up to 3rd generation platies.

What has to stay -
4 x kuhli loaches
2 x SAE
lots x Shrimp
6 x apple snails (small)

Whats going -
4 x cories
7 x platies
6 x guppies
1 x paradise fish

In the undecided group is one otocinclus.

I'm thinking of adding
10 x sparkling gouramis (v. tiny)
Plus
4 x large bettas (pugnax? falx?)
OR
2 schools of something colourful
OR
6 betta coccina
OR
maybe even some killies, but all i can find are panchax, which i think are too big.

any thoghts on the matter?

Two SAEs will take up a LOT of room in a 26 gall, so I'd go with something light, like the 4x pugnax, which are better looking than flaxes, IMO. Keep the ottos, because they're just cute like that.

yeah, i'm kinda umming and arring about the pugnax as they are fairly beefy and maybe i'd be better off with smaller fish.

and there is only one single oto, its a longish story, but suffice to say that i'm too scared to buy any more in case this one dies!

I'd add a kuhli loach or two, and then go for at least one school of a colorful tetra. I agree with the above in that you should move at least one of the SAEs, they get pretty large. I'm not really a fan of killifish, probably because I've never kept them.

The 2 SAE are staying. They are full size and about 4 years old and one spends a majority of his day vegging under the rocks (the other is a fruitloop who suspends hinself head first over the spraybar )
They have such a good relationship i wouldnt want to take one away.

Tho, the more i think about it the more i think that another set of large fish would be dumb dumb dumb.

What sort of tetras do you think?

Well, if you want two schools, then I'd suggest maybe cardinals and rummys. Both are small tetras, but they each have a lot of color. It really boils down to personal opinion, though I think Cochu's blue tetras are really nice looking. I don't have a lot of selection in my area, and you're in Australia anyways, so I don't know what is available around you.

not very much! LOL, i've actually always wanted rummies, but i also have to take into account that our area is in drought and WQ will be progressively dropping and rummies around here are touchy.

I've never kept any tetras, and to be quite honest, i'm a little nervous!

What sorts of tetras are available in your area? Glowlights are nice...it's early, I'm thinking Maybe instead of tetras harlequins, or a non-nippy barb like pentazona or golds?

I also like the gourami and betta idea, probably because that's similar to what I have.

Hmmmm...I'd say go with something different...if you've never had tetras that's a good choice. I'd love to try killies but don't know much about them.

Too many choices, have you narrowed it down at all?

Glowlight tetras are a nice idea, they're very common aswell (well at least where i live they are). Cardinals are another good option, or black neons or what about Emperor tetras.

As PJ said, black neons would be a nice choice. I have them myself, and it was my first attempt at a community tank with tetras. They're the only species in the tank that I haven't lost one of - AKA they're hardy. They add a nice flash of color (I have 10) and they stay in the top middle region of the tank. You can't really see it in the pic, but they have red "eyebrows" that at the same time are really weird and really funny.

Ditch it all for tiger barbs.

Or get blue eyed rainbows!! They're very pretty, stay small and are rather docile
