k in the profiles it says the rope fish max size is 35 inches...

i just took two home today this is the first time i have seen them at work... they are 6-7 inches and i got them in a 20gallon with some catfish

anyways.. my uncle has 6 and he has had them for 3 years and they are only 10 inches

so do they really get 35inches?

Yes, they can get to this size however in aquariums they tend to grow to a smaller size (60cm or 23 inches is the largest I've seen he was about 6 or 7 years old) also they are a very slow growing fish gennerally speaking, awesome to watch as I'm sure you have found out already.

I am so sorry but, isn't a 20 gallon tank a little small for a fish that could reach 35 inches????

Mind you I know nothing about this fish, I am sorry if that was a little blunt, but isnt it??

On top of that you have more fish in there as well.

I am thinking maybe you should stick around for another person who could help you in what size tank he needs.

Sorry I could not help you in the size.

So you work at an LFS? Does that mean sooner or later your bringing the fish back?? Its not the water that matters its the well being of the fish and his swimming room.....

I also maintain my tanks very well, I own oscars, very messy, one is only 4 inches in an 80 gallon tank and its still hard to keep water up.

I find it hard that you can even FIT a fish that gets that size in that tank.....Maybe its just me but we will see I guess.....

lol they fit in the tank... no im not bringing them back.. im trying to get a hold of a 100 gallon so i can combine all 3 20s of mine..

they even swim on the other half of the tank...

i have one half with pipes and one half with a little bit of rocks and plants

they both stay in the pipes and swim in the area around them... they are roomates to 2 upsidedown catfish and 1 honey dwarf gourami... the gourami is amazed by them.. he sits there watching them its funny

Does anyone have a picture of their ropefish? I would love to see what one looks like. I have heard of them on here, but never seen one.

I've always found that most fish never get as big is the wild unless you have a really big, understocked tank.
If overcrowded, the hormone level in the aquarium produced by the other fish can stunt the fishes growth.

BTW, the minimum tank size for a ropefish in my opinion is a 55g. Once again they are slow growing so if they are in a 20g while young and a much larger tank is being planned for them they should be okay ^_^
