Just before leaving on vacation last week, I put together a new 20 gallon tank and set it on the path to cycling. Apparently, there were some wire supports inside one of the new artificial plants. When I returned, the wires had started to rust and left orange spots all over the plant and on some of my larger rocks located nearby. I have removed and disposed of the offending plant. If I scrub down the other stained items, can I safely return them to the tank without any long term toxic effects?

Shouldn't be a problem. However, are you sure that the rocks were just stained from the rusting wire, or is there another issue with them?

The wire was definitely the cause of the rust and the stains. I scrubbed the rocks and they came clean fairly easily. The rocks had been in the tank for a good while with no problems before the addition of the plant with the wire.

Shouldn't be any problems then. You may want to do a couple or three 50% water changes over the next week and that should clear anything up.
