I've had 3 goldfish in my 60L tank for the past four months! After some information that i've been given from this forum (thanks guys), i've realised that the pet store where i bought my fish gave me dodgy advice!!!! I really shouldn't have that many goldfish in such a small tank! Well i've given my goldifsh to a friend with a bigger tank, and i'm looking at putting platies and guppies in my 60L, so...

Do i need to change the water before putting the platies and guppies in?

Does it matter that goldfish have just been in that tank?

i dont think it matters as long as the goldfish were all healthy. you will just need a heater for your new fish

In general, you want to keep persistant with water changes or gravel vacs, at least once a week
Exceptions include if the tank is going through a cycle or laziness

edit: no to you're second question, make sure there wasn't a long enough of a period without ammonia for your tank to become uncycled before you add whatever new fish you are getting

Just as a bit of clarification:

If you mean "Should I totally drain the tank and start with a completely new supply of water" the answer is no. However you should do partial water changes (10-30%) on a regular basis to get rid of accumulated nitrates.

you should at least change some of the water
since goldfish poos a lot, nitrate will build up in your tank

you will need a heater for tropical fish
i have a 60L tank too and i use a 150 watt heater

plants are always a good idea
good for babies to hide in, and they absorb nitrate from the water
so you will have better water quality and healthier fish
