Hi, I have 2 axolotls which until now have been doing quite well. The one keeps floating on the top, sometimes on its side. This is the first its ever happenend. Can anyone give me some advice?

Thanks,

Hello Jellybabe, Nice to meet you

Is your flag correct? are you residing in Afghanistan at present?

My first thought is the temperature. Axies float when the temperature gets too hot. What temperature is the tank?

Second would be the food, what are you feeding them?

Third, how large is the tank? Sometimes waste products can cause them to float.

If you could answer these, it will go a long way to helping your little mates

No, i'm not from afganistan. I only noticed it now and I have tried to change it but it hasn't worked yet. Maybe I should log out. I'm really from the Gold Coast Australia.

I feed them shrimp and cray pellets recommended by the local.
The tank water is about 26 degrees celcius and holds 30 litres.

I changed the water but its still at it.

Thanks for your help.

Ok, that water is a tad warm.

get a few 600mL coke bottles, fill them full of water and freeze them. Then, you can float one in the top of the tank to try to drop the temperature. When one ceases doing its job, you can add a new one and replace the melted one to the freezer.

Here is a small section from their FAQ

Axolotls do well at temperatures between 14 °C (57 °F) and 22 °C (72 °F). Temperatures over 25 °C (77 °F) are stressful and invariably stress the animal, leading to disease such as fungal and/or bacterial infection, then anorexia and death. Axolotls are cold water animals, not warm or tropical water animals. They shouldn't be kept at the same temperatures as tropical fish.

If you read down, there are answers to common causes of floating and treatment.
