I dont have any slate readily avaiuble to me. And i work so i dont have any time to go to a garden center to find some. What else works like slate that they could lay theres eggs on? Any flat smoot service? Or is there something about slate that just draws them too it?

Get one of those tall plastic Amazon Sword plants. That's what mine usually laid on even with slate in the tank.

You can get pretty cheap slate at stores like Home Depot. Go to the flooring dept and get one natural slate floor tile and break it.

Good luck, Mike

Well on the note of the slate. I work swing shift(3:30 pm- 2 am) so i dont have time to run to a home depot or anything. And i dont have a home depot or anything of the sort in my town. I have some live plants in there tank with large leaves. Along with a fake rock structure, drift wood, half a clay pot, half a coconut, and smooth rocks. So they have lots of places to lay there eggs. Just no slate. Noing mu luck they will pick the heater or filter intake.

BREEDING QUESTIONS: There depositers have been dropped for over 24 hours now, and they are cleaning the large leaves on the live plants. Is this a sign they are going to lay eggs soon? How long do angelfish usually have there depositers dropped before they lay eggs? Ive got three BN in this tank with the angels, should i be worried about them going after any eggs they might lay? I plan on leaving atleast one of the lights on at night so they can gaurd them. Ive never really seen a cichlid full of eggs, but the female is much plumper then the male so i think she is full of eggs. I doubt she was holding any before i put them together. They have only been together for about three days. How long does it take a angelfish to fill up with eggs? Do they have to have them in side them for a certain ammount of time before she can lay them? I probably should have conditioned them first i think. Thanks for any answers you guys might have to my many questions.

They're probably going to lay on the leaf they are cleaning.
Their papillea can be showing for 4-5 days before they lay bit usually no more than 2.
They'll lay every 10-14 days if the eggs are removed or they eat them. Once in a while they'll take a break for a month or so.
The BNs probably won't get to the eggs, the parents will drive them off.

Hope this helps, Mike

Pretty much any non toxic item that offers a vertically oriented surface will suffice. Some options include weighted tupperware spagetti storage containers, plates, lengths of PVC pipe, plastic report covers cut into strips and weighted down at one end.

I use a long thin glass slab. The kind that you use for the bathroom windows. The one with ridges/groves are GREAT.

a big rock around the size of a soft ball will work as well

i would have to disagree.

My angles couldnt fight off my pleco when they were breeding, and the pleco would eat all of their eggs.

Mine used to lay them on these lilli-pad type fake plants we used to have.
