If it is dead, you should remove it to limit water contamination, as with all other decaying things in a tank. I am assuming that if you had anything that would eat a dead snail, it would have already devoured a live snail and made this point moot. |

Also, if it hasn't moved & fish are picking at it, maybe it's giving off a dead scent & they are attracted to that. But then maybe fish don't like dead snails? I really don't know. The consequences? A dead snail. Also if it is large & rotting it may foul your water, in which case I would throw it away & do a partial water change. A snail person may respond to your post. If they do I would take their advice over mine, as I am not a snail person. |

Snails decompose at a hugely rapid rate in water because their bodies are mostly water. I had a huge apple snail disappear within 48 hours, all I found was the shell and the trapdoor, and a couple little bits of jelly snail body left. Open the lid and smell the tank.
