How can u know if the snail in your tank is dead or no? What are the consequences?

Probably the most effective way to determine whether it's dead or alive is to gently poke it around.
If it is dead, you should remove it to limit water contamination, as with all other decaying things in a tank. I am assuming that if you had anything that would eat a dead snail, it would have already devoured a live snail and made this point moot.

I know nothing about snails but would assume that if it hasn't moved in 24 hrs. that it is dead. Also, if it hasn't moved & fish are picking at it, maybe it's giving off a dead scent & they are attracted to that. But then maybe fish don't like dead snails? I really don't know.

The consequences? A dead snail. Also if it is large & rotting it may foul your water, in which case I would throw it away & do a partial water change.

A snail person may respond to your post. If they do I would take their advice over mine, as I am not a snail person.

If its an apple snail, and its laying there open,
chances are its dead.
Poke it and see if it closes up.

Snails decompose at a hugely rapid rate in
water because their bodies are mostly water.
I had a huge apple snail disappear within
48 hours, all I found was the shell and the trapdoor,
and a couple little bits of jelly snail body left.

Open the lid and smell the tank.
If its dead your nose will tell you pretty quick.
They smell pretty ripe when they are dead.

Pick it up and smell it. Dead snail is probably the worst smell ever. If you get the rotting snail meat on your hands it can take days to get rid of that smell.

Just smell it & you'll know the answer pretty soon.
