Can snails harbor disease or parasites? I have a large population of malaysian trumpet snails in my 36 gallon tank and have had some trouble with deaths by what seems to be either parasite or bacterial infections. If the snails could be the culprit, how can I get rid of them- without hurting my fish?

The snails are probably not the problem. I have a large population of snails in my tank that seem to never cause health problems. They do cause a little extra waste, but not much, since they also clean. If you want to try to get rid of the snails it depends on what kind of fish you have and if your tank is planted or not. Some fish are very sensitive to any de-snail product. Also, if compatible, there are some snail eating fishes. So...tell us a little about your tank!

Have you added any new fish lately? What is your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate. Most snails that are breed in aquariums are for the most part not intermediate hosts for such parasites.

most aquaria snails have been bred and raised in tanks for generations. unless your snails have been recent wild captures, any cooties they may be harboring should be easily handled by your fish.

All of my parameters have been good throughout the few months that this has occured:

pH: 7.8 (normal for this tank)
Ammonia: 0
Nitrites: 0
NitrAtes: less than 15 ppm

I do not know the source of the snails before the lfs. They may have been introduced from a wild source.

My remaining fish include guppies, zebra danios, and pygmy cories (supposedly the most sensitive of the group, but completely unaffected so far). I have one live plant, a java fern. If I decide to get rid of the snails, what are my options?
