I bought a plant from my local fish store several weeks ago and now I have millions of tiny snails. I've been picking out the bigger ones but there are so many small ones. I've completly cleaned my tank but can't get rid of them all. Any ideas??

One of the best (and most natural) ways to eliminate snails is to buy snail-eating fish. Loaches seem to be the best way to go, most loaches (especially young ones) love eating snails. I would only add them if you had the room, though.

Hey, it's a bit late in the reply but as the way I see it. Snails are horrible. I had one once and my mom found it almost on the other side of the room. It was in a bowl. If you want to get rid of them fast and don't want to spend any money in the process, just gather the snails and put table salt in the water. It might be a bit cruel but snails are a nuisence.

Sorry I have to disagree, personally I like snails, the three apples I have are interesting. If you don't have room in your tank for snail eating fish, there are chemicals at your lfs to remove the snail. Just check and make sure ALL your fish are safe with use of the products.

Pennies in the filter But Only ones that werent minted before 1957 (moon back me up on this date please) because those are the only ones minted with copper. Current pennies will not work. Of course, like Nick said, snail eating shishies will work too, but only if you have the room for 'em.

Sorry Liana, but you're a little bit wrong. Pennies minted before 1982 have copper in them, the ones you're talking about are the wheat cent pennies. :%)
Pennies in the filter supposedly work well, I'd just clean the penny before I stuck it in my tank, who knows what kind of people have handled it before you?

Liana: Pennies nowadays are minted using a zinc alloy, then coated in copper.

I've used copper in filers to rid tanks of ich and it works exceptionally well. Common snail away treaments are nothing but liquified copper anyway. I suggest one clean shiny new penny per 5 gallons, and they'll be toast. Just be sure you don't actually want to keep inverts anytime in the near future as the copper will get into the silicone and wreak havoc on the newcomers. Plants don't particularly like copper either, so only use it until the need is gone.

I've always had quite a bit of luck just using a piece of lettuce or a cucumber spear.. Chuck them into the tank and hold it down with a nice rock, then in the morning you just take them out when they've all swarmed onto the food..

my kuhlis never ate snails, and the lettuce trick only worked for me in smaller tanks. my 125 gal is infested with them. red clawed crabs, a brown knifefish, and a weatherloach currently keep the population in check.

i am of the opinion that snails are not all that bad. i HATE adding chemicals into my tank to control percieved problems. i only added the snail predators to keep the population under control.

For a larger tank, clown loaches work well, or try a black banded leporinus. I harvest snails out of my pond for an occasional fish snack. Put 'em in at night and net out the empty shells in the morning.
