I am getting some brown algae in my 55 gallon goldie tank. Is there anything, such as a snail, that I can put in there to take care of the algae?? The only thing that is in the tank now is 1 red capped oranda.
Thanks in advance,
Stella

for brown algae, your best bet is a trio of ottos. The are awesome little fish, and very efficient. They'll probably have your entire tank free of brown algae in a week, they love the stuff so much!

If you want snails, get some malasyian trumpet snails. I sent Sin In Style a bag of 'em, and now he's overrun with 'em... but they cleared his tank of brown algae lickety split!

MTS will work great, as will ottos. You could try some shrimp too, normally they're pretty awesome cleaners too...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

Thanks for all your input - I may try the ottos, I'm not too keen on having one snail one day and a million the next Will the ottos be ok in the coldwater tank? I think the temp stays at about 73 during the day and drops to 72 at night.

Thanks again,
Stella

Unlike other snails, Malaysian Trumpet Snails do not breed as quickly as others and are quite good for your tank IMO. Just be careful of your water parameters as otto's can be quite very very sensitive... I myself have the malaysian trumpet snails, ghost shrimp and an albino bristle nose for the algae problem that I had... but you have to do what is best for you and your tank (and what is available to you). Good luck!
