freshreef Fingerling Posts: 40 Kudos: 15 Votes: 1 Registered: 22-Aug-2006 | Hi all, im kinda new here,...but I will tell about my self later...LOL right now I got a question that kinda needs answering ok, my freind's dad is building a restaurant and so of course..he is a fish person like me... so he is putting a 180gall freshwater in their! and he wants to do chiclids/or nice like....amazon set up (even though he is leaning torwards chiclids I am leaning toward amazon but oh well) (sp)...ok fine with me right... he is wanting to do like parrot fish and angel fish and all these un-compatible fish and I keep telling him it is NOT GOING TO WORK but he wont believe me, I told him he should do like a semi-planted tank with like amazon sword, anubias, java fern/moss ect and some driftwood/rocks and have angel's and/or discus and some neon tetra and some harlequin rasbora and cories ect but no, he has to waste $$ and fish lives to learn the hard way... I mean I dont care if he does the chiclid as it is not my tank nor my decision but I was just giving my suggestion..... but UGGG so what would be a good set-up do you guy's think....? maybe he will listen to you...cause he wont listen to me....thanks 29gall-2 bolivian rams, 6 neon tetra, 4 lemon tetra, 2 lamp eye tetra, 6 black skirt tetra(which are rescues...long story, but finding good home soon), 4 zebra danio 10gall, pretty much nothing but plants....2gall-female betta 1gall-female betta |

In his books he lists all the animals, plants, and techniques he uses to create his tanks, and you could get some really good ideas. In a 180 gallon planted tank, you could have two schools of 30-50 tetras or small cyprinids, as well as a few larger "centerpiece" fish. Discus might be a bit shy for a busy restaurant, but there are many other larger fish that would do well in that setup. Keep fighting... Don't let him waste that tank on some stupid hybrid cichlids. I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |

There are many other species that should be fine, however, such as most Rasboras, Rummynose Tetras (which are a bit larger than Neons), and any of the deeper-bodied tetras like Bleeding Hearts, Head and Tail Lights, Rosy Tetras, and Diamond Tetras. freshreef Fingerling Posts: 40 Kudos: 15 Votes: 1 Registered: 22-Aug-2006 | hmmm..really, I had angel fish (ages ago) and they never bothered my neons, I had about 9 of them..... but I will keep that in mind...oh also, would the angels bother the bolivian rams or german blue rams? Thanks for all your help 29gall-2 bolivian rams, 6 neon tetra, 4 lemon tetra, 2 lamp eye tetra, 6 black skirt tetra(which are rescues...long story, but finding good home soon), 4 zebra danio 10gall, pretty much nothing but plants....2gall-female betta 1gall-female betta |

A pair of angels might be a bit different but still would probably work. Doing SA cichlids might be a good compromise to have both a planted tank and a coloful cichlid tank. Territorial disputes amongst rams can be nearly as entertaining as more agressive cichlids without 1 of them as likely to end up dead or injured. I doubt most people want to eat in a restaurant with beat up fish in the tank from compatibility or agression issues. |

bonny Ultimate Fish Guru Engineer in waiting Posts: 3121 Kudos: 498 Votes: 7 Registered: 09-Mar-2003 | If i had that tank (geussing it's 6'*2'*2') I'd have a group of 6 angels, about 40 tetras (neons, cardinals, x-rays etc whichever he finds most attractive) 15 corys (again whichever he finds most attractive) and 5-7 rams (bolivian or german) and maybe a bristlenose or some ottos. Heavily plant the tank with some decent lighting and some form of CO2. The tetras should be fine with the angels as long as the tetras are added first, the angels are added small and the angels are kept well fed. In a tank that size with 6 angels you're bound to get a breeding pair which would be a spectacular sight even if it's unlikely that any fry would survive. |
