Can someone help me compile a checklist of things I will need upon startup of my new 29 gallon? Like filter, heater, ph test kit, other kits, net, etc... any other accesories? I could do this myself but I ALWAYS forget something (if not many things) important!

oh! and what brand/wattage light should I use? I am planning for many plants, some which will be low-growing.

Well I'll start you out

-Tank (doh )
-Adequate Filtration
-Adequate Heating
-A plant friendly substrate
-Plants and decor
-Dechlor
-Test kits for pH, ammonia, nitrIte, nitrAte
-Net
-Good quality foods
-Lid or Hood
-Lighting depends on which plants you want to grow, since different plants require different amounts of light. As for the brand, I just use HomeDepot or Lowes type stores.
Questionable---Ferts and CO2 injections
-and the best for last, FISH!!! what are you planning on putting in this tank?

I hope I didn't foget anything.

EDIT: Okay I did...knew I would.
-Gravel Vac
-FOB

im planning for:

6 jullii corys
6 cardinal tetras
6 harlequin rasboras
2 pineapple swordtails
1 gourami

not sure on what gourami. probably a dwarf due to being kind of overstocked, though I would rather a pearl. I think it will be ok if I really stay on top of the maintenance.

If you can find TRUE julii cories, you are very lucky. Most juliis are mistaken for C. trilineatus. I would go with a smaller cory since I think you are pushing your limit a little bit, maybe go with one that stays under 2". If you go with the gourami, I would get a dwarf, and def. only one. A gourami should take care of any swordtail fry. HTH

EDIT: I believe swordtails get rather big...you might want to consider leaving them out. If they are a must, make sure you keep up with maintence.

Swordtails are probably too big for a 29g. If you're planning to breed livebearers are best kept in ratios of at least 1M/2F. You could go with platies instead, came variety of colors, only difference is the males don't have the long sword.

the 2 swortails are coming from my 10 gal, I have 4 in there now and I'm breaking them up into 2 pairs, they are all females, right now they're not too big. I will probably move them if they get to be too big, my best friend runs the fish tank at my school and it is inhabited by the big mother that came from her tank (who is also the mother of mine because I got mine from her as well) and her fry who are now about 1/2 inch or so. It is a very healthy tank. If/when mine get to be too big I can trade them into school for 2 of the fry. for now I am going to use my 4 to cycle the tank and and then split them up once it has cycled

btw, I have 1 jullii right now, and hes a true jullii ( he's only got 1 line ) when I bought him I thought he would be ok without a school and he is very hyperactive and a happy now and I've been told he will be an even more interesting fish once he has a proper school! this is why I am getting more of the same

edit: well i THINK hes a true jullii, here are some pix, is he really a jullii?

Trilineatus - he has reticulations on his head. True Juliis (of which there are essentially none in the US) have only spots on the head.

Swords do well in a 29 gal, just watch out for breeding. With only two you should be fine, they only get 4-5 in. My gourami doesn't do a thing to keep down the fry population so I end up selling a few to my LFS every few weeks. They seem to like my pineapple swords better than the ones from their distributor.

Yes you can Devon. Siphons are excellent gravel vacs.

Here's soem other things:

1) Water treatment - to remove chlorine from tap water. I would recommend "Stress Coat"

2) Buy a five gallon plastic bucket at Lowes or Home Depot. Wash it out with plain old hot water over and over until you are sure there can be nothing in it.

3) You might want to consider a Python. Here's the link http://www.bigalsonline.com/search/?type=catalog&method=all&collection=sitebuilder%2Fcatalog3-1&keywords1=python

[Edit} Strike number 1, just noticed it in Ferrets first post. Sorry Ferret!
