"...i really wish I could get a 20 gallon but its a new house so my mom doesent want it to wegih 2 much and damage the floor."
Tell you mom it will only about 200lbs. There is no way that could damage a new floor. Think about it, the average adult human male weighs around 200lbs.

chances are a 20 gallon tank will way the same or less than a decent sized entertainment center with a medium-large size tv and other equipment. I have 10 tanks in my house ranging in size from 10 to 150 gallons and so far my floors are fine.

yep the rapheal is a bad idea and they will eat platy fry.
Most catfish get to big for a 10g, or are schooling and pl*cos produce alot of waste for a 10g.
Have you thought of shrimp? they aren't catfish, but they are kool.
But if you can convince your mum that you can a have a 20g, a school of corys would be good.

I don't think a 20 gallon is a problem as far as weight is concerned. If that is your mom's only concern, tell her you will put it on an outside wall of the house, which will be much able to handle more weight than if you put it where there is no support under it.

BTW, I weigh about 200 lbs also and the only thing I've damaged lately is a couple of bags of chips.

Maybe in the US

I've seen beams in houses bowed from 50 gal tanks before.

But the difference between 20 and 50 is well, 30 gal!

I've got a 10 gal on my desk, it only weighs about 100lb.

How about a pitbull plec?

Is there anything else you really want to have in the tank besides 1 platy and a catfish? You might want to consider more than 1 platy though, they do like to have friends.

About the weight doesn't make sense, I have a 50 gallon in a 150 year old house...

Anyway, about the catfish, you see, that's a pretty big fish, it will not be good for your tank. Maybe you want to look at having a school of corydoras catfish. Look on the profiles for a smaller sized corydoras.

A 20 gallon isn't really that more expensive, and that could allow you to get a school of corydoras. You could have a few platies and a school of corydoras (though that really wouldn't fit in a 10 gallon).

Most catfishes can grow to a large size (approx 30cm or more in adulthood). Do some research on which particular catfish you are eyeing on prior to purchasing them.
